Mayweather wants Khan to fight Brook

floyd56By Scott Gilfoid: Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. thinks it would be a really good idea for Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) to face IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs). Mayweather thinks it would be a good fight for the sport of boxing if the two of them fought each other.

As for Khan wanting to fight Mayweather in a big money fight, Mayweather is cool to that idea. He says that Khan should only bother looking him up when he starts making $300 million per fight. In other words, don’t bother calling. I think Khan is making considerably less than that for each fight unfortunately.

“I think he’s [Khan] a really, really good fighter. I think Danny Garcia is a very good fighter,” Mayweather said to Fighthype.com. “I think right now for boxing, for the UK fans, Kell Brook and Amir Khan would be a good fight. Kell Brook, he’s a guy that everyone is sleeping on.”

We don’t know how good Brook is because he’s only fought one talented fighter in Shawn Porter, and he used nonstop clinching in that fight to win a controversial 12 round decision. I still had Porter winning that fight despite Brook being all over him like a giant octopus in the fight with his holding. If Brook could beat someone good without needing to hold, then I would say he’s a good fighter, but right now, I can’t say that Brook is a quality guy. I think he’s a paper champion and would lose to Porter in a rematch, and lose to the likes of Khan and Errol Spence Jr. I also think Tim Bradley and Keith Thurman both beat him. Brook vs. Danny Garcia would be a toss up fight. I could see either guy getting the win in that fight.

Mayweather and Khan were jawing at each other last Saturday night at the Robert Guerrero vs. Danny Garcia fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Both guys were sitting near each other and were trash talking back and forth during the fight.

“I basically just told Amir Khan, ‘You know, when you can make $300 million in one night, get in touch with Al and then we can talk. Until then, PYP! Play your position!’,” said Mayweather.

It’s too bad that Khan doesn’t bring in that kind of money per fight because he’s been pining away for a fight against Mayweather for at least four years, maybe more. If Mayweather could throw Khan a bone by letting him have a fight against him, I think Khan would be eternally grateful for the opportunity. If not, then the best that Khan can hope for is a title shot against Brook in the summer on June 4 at Wembley Stadium in London, UK. Khan could make $10 million for that fight, which would be a career high for him. It’s unclear how much Brook would be getting, but I imagine it would be in excess of $2 million. If Brook won the fight, it would raise his signature in the boxing world and help him get bigger fights. I’m not sure if Brook would be ready to take on the big lions though. I mean, if you throw Brook in with the likes of Spence, Bradley, Thurman and Garcia, and tell him he can’t clinch 10 X per round, I don’t know if Brook would do well. I think he’d end up getting out-boxed in most cases, and likely stopped by the big hitters Spence and Thurman. Bradley and Garcia would probably out-box Brook and win an easy decision.

I really think Brook will need to KO Khan to win this fight, because Khan has the far superior boxing skills in my view, and he’s the faster guy and he moves a lot better. Brook is one of those guys that likes to fight stationary guys that back up against the ropes the way Frankie Gavin was doing in Brook’s last fight. I’ve never see Brook have to use his short legs to go after a fighter that used movement and a long jab against him the way that Khan would be doing. I think it would be a disaster for Brook unless Khan stopped and just went at it. This could be a very bad fight for Brook with him getting out-boxed and dominated for 12 rounds.
