By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated #4 IBF heavyweight contender Charles Martin (22-0-1, 20 KOs) will be looking to make a statement this Saturday night against #1 IBF Vyacheslav Glazkov (21-0-1, 13 KOs) in their battle for the vacant IBF heavyweight title on Showtime Championship Boxing from the beautiful Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Martin, 6’5”, has the power, speed and youth advantage over the 31-year-old Ukrainian Glazkov. As we’ve seen in the past, Glazkov is someone that the judges have given HUGE breaks in fights against Derric Rossy, Malik Scott, Steve Cunningham and to some extent Tomasz Adamek.

Many fans believe that Glazkov deserved a loss against Rossy, Scott and Cunningham, and I totally agree with them. That’s why I think the 29-year-old Martin may need a knockout on Saturday to make sure he doesn’t wind up on the receiving end of a good old fashioned controversial decision.

“It’s here now, man. I get to fight for the IBF World Title,” Martin said. “As soon as I get this belt, I want to unify. I want everything. I want all the hardware. Look out for “Prince” Charles Martin. I’m here to make a statement and you guys are going to see, finally. I’ve been under wraps a long time but now the world can see me display my skill. Yes, I can’t wait to unify. I want everything.”

Martin’s chances of getting a nice unification fight definitely are there for him if he can escape being the fourth controversial decision victim against Glazkov. That’s going to be tough though because Glazkov seems to be able to do no wrong in the ring when it comes to the judges.

I’ve seen Glazkov lose at least four times, and still get decision wins. That tells me that he’s pretty much unbeatable unless Martin comes to KO Glazkov, which I would highly recommend him doing. He cannot let the judges decide the outcome of this fight because I see it going against Martin unless he decides to make the judges into spectators.

“He’s never been in the ring with a fighter like me,” Martin said via Fight News. “I’m no Cunningham. I’m no Tor Hamer. I’m none of these guys that he fought. I’m totally a different fighter than he’s ever seen. So come fight night, I’m ready to prove it to the whole wide world. I’m ready to be that superstar. That’s what you guys are going to see.”

Martin hasn’t faced anyone as talented as Glazkov before, so this is going to be a big step up for him in this fight. Martin has been padding his record against the likes of Raphael Zumbano Love, Tom Dallas, Vicente Sandez, Damon McCreary and Kertson Manswell. That’s not good because Martin is too old to be still fighting fodder opposition like that, and he should have stepped it up a long time ago against better fighters than that.

It might be too much of a jump up for him next Saturday when he gets inside the ring with Glazkov. I don’t rate Glazkov as being a good fighter, but when you’ve been fighting the kind of horrible opposition that Martin has been fighting his entire four-year pro career, it’s asking a lot to fight someone even at Glazkov’s level.

“He’s definitely a step up on paper,” said Martin. “His resume reads well. He’s a good fighter. He’s technical, keeping his hands up and stuff like that, has a pretty nice hook. But I got to give you the ups and the downs. He’s a little guy. I’m massive, strong, powerful, elusive. He’s definitely going to be in there for the hardest fight of his life that he’ll ever have.”

Martin, 29, definitely has the size and punching power to win this fight if he can go after Glazkov the entire three minutes of every round. That’s the big question though. Martin looks lazy at times, and he’s just too economical with his punches for his own good. This could be an easy fight if he could use his size and power advantage against the smaller, weaker and older Glazkov. I’m just not sure that Martin can do that though. If gets lazy in there on Saturday night, you can bet that Glazkov will steal the rounds with his activity level. The judges will no doubt be giving the rounds to the guy that is working the hardest in there, and I suspect that the 31-year-old Glazkov will be the better man.
