By Jim Dower: In a disappointing mismatch, undefeated heavyweight Joseph Parker (17-0, 15 KOs) smashed out American Daniel Martz (14-3-1, 1 KOs) in one round tonight in a contest at the Clauderlands Arena in Hamilton, New Zealand.

Saunders clipped Martz with a right hand in the 1st round that toppled him forward onto his face. Martz attempted to rise to the canvas but he couldn’t find his feet. The match was halted at 1:57 by referee Marlon Wright.

The 6’7” Martz threw almost no punches in the fight, as he was mostly circling the ring endlessly trying to get away from Parker. It was like a cat chasing a big mouse with Parker going after the lighter punching Martz, and hitting him each time he could trap him against the ropes. Parker did a good job of landing body punches to the moving Martz.

The body shots and the combinations to the head did a good job of slowing Martz down. Parker was able to connect with a hard right to the midsection that took away Martz’s ability to move away moments before the knockout right hand.

The right from Parker that flattened Martz was a chopping right that hit him high on the head. It didn’t look like it connected cleanly, but Martz was bowled over just the same. It was a good long punch from Parker, who fought mostly on the outside in this fight rather than on the inside like he’d been doing in many of his previous fights.

Parker feels that he’s ready to take on the likes of Tyson Fury for his world titles. However, for Parker to get a crack at the likes of Fury, he’s going to need to pick up a high ranking because Fury probably won’t jump at the chance to fight a fearless puncher. Fury beat Wladimir Klitschko last Saturday night, but Wladimir wasn’t throwing punches.

Parker isn’t that type of fighter to give his opponents the same kind of respect that Wladimir gave Fury. Parker would be looking to KO Fury with every punch, and he wouldn’t waste a lot of time with niceties like clinching and jabbing.

Parker throws strictly power shots to the head and body. He would force Fury to come up with some kind of game plan to try and negate what he’s doing. As we saw tonight, moving in wide circles doesn’t work against Parker. He’s too good at cutting off the ring and punching holes through his opponents.

For Parker to lose, he’s going to need to face someone that can out-punch him. He’s not going to be beaten by boxing and moving. It’s going to take a big puncher who is fearless and ready to stand up to him power.
