Tyson Fury’s trainer says they’ve got a good plan to beat Klitschko

By Scott Gilfoid: Trainer Peter Fury believes that the plan that he’s got for his fighter Tyson Fury (24-0, 18 KOs) will be perfect for him to defeat IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs) this Saturday night at the ESPRIT Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Peter is pretty confident that the plan will work to defeat Klitschko. It’s unclear what that plan could be though, because the fighting style that have derailed Wladimir in the past is heavy pressure and hard punches from sluggers. Fury isn’t a pressure fighter though, and he’s not a hard puncher.

Fury is a fighter likes to stay at medium distance, slap with his punches and lean back to avoid incoming. That style will be totally useless against a tall fighter like Wladimir, who can fight at a distance using his jab, left hook and right hand to do major damage to his opponents.

“We’ve got our plans and they’ve got theirs. Tyson will have to box to some kind of orders and that’s what he’ll do,” Peter Fury said to skysports.com. “Tyson will be composed because we’ve got good game plans going into this fight. We’re happy with them and we’re looking forward to a big fight.”

Peter is really giving himself a ton of credit by assuming that his game plan will be effective for Fury against Klitschko. If things don’t work out for Fury using Peter’s game plan in the early going on Saturday, I hope for his sake that he has the sense enough to know that he needs to put Peter on ignore and go with what he feels will work inside the ring.

I don’t think there’s anything that Fury has done in the ring in his past fights that will work at all against Klitschko. We’re talking about a limited fighter with Fury, and his lack of punching power, hand speed, boxing skills and his fragile chin will make it impossible for him to do anything in this fight.

“He can’t go in there and lose control in a ring with someone like Wladimir. Make no mistake – it can be over in one hit,” Peter said.

It doesn’t matter if Fury loses control or not on Saturday. He’s still going to have a ton of problems in the ring with Klitschko. Even when Fury is fighting carefully, he’s still wide open for power shots to the head. If you look at all of Fury’s recent fights against Christian Hammer, Joey Abell and Dereck Chisora, all of those fighters were able to nail him with shots despite being much shorter than him.

In the case of Wladimir, there’s only a small difference in height and reach between the two fighters, and Wladimir has the superior ability to get the most extension on his shots compared to the longer-armed Fury. This means that Wladimir will really be the taller fighter in the ring in this fight with the better ability to stay on the outside and dominate the action.

“It’ll be difficult for Klitschko to manhandle him,” Peter said. “To beat Klitschko you have to win convincingly. You’re going over there and he’s the champion so you have to be fairly convincing.

Klitschko doesn’t try and manhandle his opponents. He likes to punch and grab, but he’s not trying to manhandle during the clinch. The only thing that Wladimir will be doing in the clinch is keeping Fury from throwing punches. Once the referee separates the two giant heavyweights, Wladimir will resume bombing Fury from long range with his jab and big power shots, and Fury won’t be able to do much because he has a terrible outside game.

There’s no issues with Fury fighting in Germany. If he does the job against Klitschko, he’ll get the decision. I mean, there’s no conspiracy going on over there where Wladimir is being given wins left and right that he didn’t deserve. When Wladimir wins his fights, it’s clear that he’s the better fighter than his opponents. Heck, most of the guys Wladimir fights fail to see the 12th round. If Fury is able to go 12 rounds with Klitschko, it’ll be a major accomplishment of the first order, because not many boxing fans believe that he’s got the talent to see the 12th round.
