Cotto-Canelo rematch likely if fight is competitive

CANELO ÁLVAREZ media day workoutBy Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) can probably forget all about him getting the winner of the November 21st super fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs). According to a source close to the 35-year-old Cotto, he’ll be electing to fight Canelo again in a rematch if the fight is close and competitive.

Of course, there’s no way of knowing whether the Cotto-Canelo fight will be a close one, but it doesn’t take a genius to see a rematch happening anyway, as long as the fight generates a ton of pay-per-view buys on HBO.

Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya is already talking about a trilogy between them, meaning that the fighters could face each other three straight times. It makes sense in terms of it being a wise business move. It might not be a great move in terms of the sport.

It would like two Super Bowl teams locking out the other teams in the NFL and choosing to play each other three straight years in Super Bowls just because their first game generated a lot of views and a lot of money. The money that Canelo and Cotto can make is much better against each other than if they were to fight someone else.

The only exceptions of that would be if Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao turned their attention to wanting to fight the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight, and I don’t think either of them is going to want to do that. Mayweather is retired, and Pacquiao is talking about retirement after his April 9th fight next year.

“WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman told the Times last month that Cotto has promised him he’d pursue a Golovkin bout if he wins, but the official close to Cotto said if the Alvarez bout is competitive, a rematch is a more favorable fight,” said Lance Pugmire of the latimes.com.

I think it’s pretty obvious that we’re going to see three straight fights between Cotto and Canelo. Golovkin is too dangerous, and the money that Canelo and Cotto could make against him is less than what they would make by fighting each other over and over again.

Canelo seems to be very interested in making a lot of money now that he got a taste of the cash in his fight against Mayweather two years ago. Cotto is obviously looking to make as much money as possible before he gets out of the sport. He’s not going to want to take a smaller payday against Golovkin either. That’s why we’re probably going to see Cotto and Canelo locking themselves into a series of fights.

“We pick every opponent at the right moment. This is the fight moment for Canelo,” Cotto said to the latimes.com.

I think by the time that Cotto and Canelo finish facing each other in 3 to 5 fights from now, the guy that emerges from the fights will likely be so worn down and beaten up that Golovkin will be able to destroy the fighter without any trouble. It’s like the rivalry between super bantamweights Rafael Marquez and Israel Vazquez.

The two fighters fought each other four times in three years between 2007 and 2010. By the time they finished the rivalry, both guys were totally shot fighters; not because of their age, but rather from all the ring wear from their four fights.
