Mayweather will be back in 2016, says Molina

Floyd Mayweather WinsBy Allan Fox: Lightweight John Molina believes that we’re going to be seeing Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) back in the ring next year to continue his long 19-year pro career.

Molina doesn’t think for a second that the 38-year-old Mayweather will be able to walk away with all the money that is still on the table for him to grab before he actually does retire for good.

Molina sees Mayweather as a smart businessman, and he doesn’t think he could just retire without taking all the money that’s available to him if he returns to the ring in 2016.

If Mayweather does come back next year, Molina thinks he should fight WBA “regular” welterweight champion Keith Thurman. Molina feels that Thurman has earned the fight against Mayweather due to the big fights he’s been involved with.

Molina doesn’t think that Mayweather will seriously entertain the idea of fighting IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. He just doesn’t see that as a fight that he’ll take. I don’t think too many boxing fans see Mayweather taking that fight either, even though it would make him a lot of money and help him win the respect from the boxing community.

“I don’t think he’s done,” Molina said to fighthype about Mayweather. If I was to bet. The smart money bet is he’s going to fight again. I don’t see why he would stop. There’s too much money on the table. Floyd’s the biggest paid athlete in the world. I don’t foresee him retiring anytime soon. Everyone is saying ‘Fight Triple G.” I don’t see it happening. I think Thurman has earned it. He’s been in big fights.”

Mayweather probably will come back next year, but it’s not going to be against Thurman or Golovkin. No way is that going to happen. Mayweather is playing it safe now, and he would have to take some serious risk if he fought Thurman or Golovkin. Further, I don’t think Mayweather will risk his neck against the new and improved Miguel Cotto, and I don’t think he’ll want to take on the maturing Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

These are dangerous fights that would lead to Mayweather having to take punishment. The only guys that I could see Mayweather fighting if he comes back is Manny Pacquiao or Danny Garcia. No one other than those two.

Pacquiao is an obvious choice because he’s small at 5’6”, and Mayweather recently beat him. There’s little risk in fighting Pacquiao again because he doesn’t have the reach to connect with his shots against Mayweather. It’s easy money Mayweather.

I don’t know of too many big fights that Thurman has been involved with. He’s fought Luis Collazo, Julio Diaz, Jesus Soto Karass, Diego Chavez, Carlos Quintana, Robert Guerrero, and Jan Zaveck. None of those fights are big fights to me. Those are all pretty much B-level opponents that Thurman has fought. The closest guy that comes to being a big fights is Guerrero, who clearly is on the downside of his career. Guerrero was arguably beaten by Aron Martinez in his last fight last June.
