Mayweather not saying a word about fighting again

Floyd Mayweather JrBy Allan Fox: Thus far there’s been no word about whether we’ll be seeing Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) back in the ring in 2016 so that he can go after win No.50 and break boxing great Rocky Marciano’s record of 49-0.

It was thought that by now Mayweather would have said something about wanting to fight again after supposedly retiring after his dull 12 round unanimous decision win over Andre Berto on September 12th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

That fight failed to catch the imagination of the fans, and if anything it angered them because of the fight being such a bad mismatch.

Showtime vice president of sports Stephen Espinoza is saying that he’s not heard anything from Mayweather about him wanting to return to the ring to resume his boxing career. But you have to understand that Mayweather recently made over a quarter of a billion dollars for his six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS, and he’s not short on money right now.

When you’ve got that kind of money in the bank, it’s possible that Mayweather isn’t as motivated as some people would be to come back and make even more money. But it’s difficult to understand what is going through Mayweather’s mind right now as far as him coming back to the ring or not.

If you go by his past behavior after making a killing in the ring, he’s going to stay away for a while and spend the money up before he comes back to the ring when he’s starting to run out of the green stuff. Mayweather stayed out of the ring for two years after he got a huge payday against Ricky Hatton back in 2007.

“He’s enjoying his time,” Espinoza said to RingTV.com. “I don’t know how he ended up in Bora Bora (in the South Pacific). He seems to be enjoying it. “Not a word about coming back. I don’t think it’s even in the realm of his consideration right now. I’m not holding my breath. I still think if I was a betting man I would say he’s not coming back.”

I think Mayweather will come back once he puts a serious dent in his money. With the way that Mayweather is spending it, I don’t see it lasing forever, and I couldn’t be surprised if he’s spent every penny of it within five years. If Mayweather stays out of the ring until he’s broke, then we could see him back in his early 40s. That’s my guess. What we don’t want to see is Mayweather penniless and reduced to working as a greeter at one of the casinos in Las Vegas.

It’s very likely that Mayweather’s hand speed would be gone by that point, as well as his reflexes. He’d be totally dependent on his defensive skills and his mobility if he still has it. Mayweather won’t win too many fights with just those skills, not against the best offensive fighters in boxing. It would be sad if Mayweather came back and ended up like Roy Jones Jr. in still fighting in his late 40s, and having to face 2nd and 3rd tier fighters in order to win.

Mayweather should think about the future and try and make as much as he can so that he couldn’t possibly spend it all up in his lifetime by using it up on gambling, jetting around the world, and buying super expensive cars that lose much of their value the minute they’re driven out of the showroom.
