Kell Brook suffers rib injury, pulls out of Diego Chaves fight

Kell BrookBy Scott Gilfoid: When it rains it pours. When you thought nothing else could hurt the October 24th Kell Brook vs. Diego Chaves fight card, we now have the news that the 29-year-old Brook has suffered a rib injury sparring and has now pulled out of the fight altogether.

Talk about your bad luck. The card was originally supposed to be televised on Sky Box Office, but that fell apart when the Wladimir Klitschko vs. Tyson Fury fight was postponed recently due to the Ukrainian Klitschko suffering an injury to his left calf. The Klitschko-Fury fight, which is taking place in Dusseldorf, Germany, was supposed to be packaged with the Brook-Chaves fight as the main event.

Brook wanted to still fight Chaves despite the rib injury but he was advised not to.
“It’s always a bitter blow when an injury causes a fight to be postponed, especially so close to the event,” Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn said to skysports.com. “We will now look to reschedule the bout for the end of the year.”

Brook suffered the rib injury during a sparring session on Thursday. The question is what was Brook doing still sparring this close to the actual fight. This reminds me of how David Haye suffered a cut while sparring close to a fight against Tyson Fury. Brook should have known better than to be still sparring with less than 10 days to go before the fight. But that’s how it goes. When you go overboard with things, you end up getting injured. I see this as a training issue. Brook needs to think about getting an accomplished trainer to take over his training because I can’t imagine a quality guy like Virgil Hunter or Freddie Roach still having their fighters sparring with less than 10 days to go before the fight.

As for the Brook-Chaves fight, it will take place before the end of the year once Brook has healed up. But with a rib injury, you just never know how long a thing like that is going to take to heal. I mean, it could linger on and on, and possibly last until next year.

Poor Chaves. It must be really bad for him to have trained hard only to find out that Brook suffered an injury still sparring this close to the fight. Chaves might have been better off fighting one of the other champions.

Matchroom Sport, the promoters for Brook, will be letting the boxing fans know shortly about refunds for their tickets they may have purchased.
