Froch to return for Golovkin?

froch552By Matt Plumridge: Carl “the Cobra” Froch (33-2, 24 early) could be in line for a return to the ring to take on the current sensation of a generation Gennady Golovkin, in what would rank as a 2016 super-fight.

Froch, who has only just announced his retirement and has recently talked up his chances of beating Golovkin, has long been motivated by his legacy and proving his greatness and winning this sort of fight would certainly help elevate Froch onto many all-time lists.

Combine this with a career high pay day and the chance for him to fulfil a long held dream of fighting in Las Vegas, and we would have us all the ingredients required to charm the Cobra back out of his basket.

Golovkin for his part has already stated his desire to fight Froch. Speaking just a few months ago his promotor Tom Loffler issued a come-and-get-us plea by challenging Froch and his promoter Eddie Hearn to back up Froch’s assertion that he would be too big and too strong for Golovkin. Golovkin and his team would certainly see Froch as a great opportunity to extend his own legend and on a PPV platform, capitalising on the profile boost Golovkin has received off the back of the Lemieux fight.

As for the actual match up, we would be seeing a further step up in class for Golovkin, who would be taking on a bona fide long standing World Champion at a higher weight class. There would be plenty to intrigue the wider sporting public and this would be an easy match up to sell on both sides of the Atlantic.

I am sure plenty will say Froch should stay retired given what he has achieved but I don’t think he will or that he should. He is a natural fitness fanatic so has remained in excellent shape since supposedly hanging them up and in boxing terms, at age 35 and with just 35 professional fights, has plenty in the tank for a few more top level dust ups and requisite bumper pay days.

In a sport where staying retired has always proven difficult for even those at the elite end – and while often a return proves ill advised – I would encourage Froch to think long and hard about this sort of opportunity while he still can. You are a long time retired they say; so while he still has the knees, it would be brilliant to see Froch take on the triple G’s.
