Froch fight still interests GGG, says Loeffler

froch7999By Scott Gilfoid: Tom Loeffler, the promoter for IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs), says they would definitely be interested in a fight against former super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) if he British fighter comes out of retirement to face him.

A fight between Golovkin and Froch was being talked about last year, but then Froch chose to retire rather than take the dangerous fight. Some boxing fans feel that Froch chickened out because of the risk that he’d get knocked out, and his legacy would be tarnished. I guess only Froch knows.

All we know is that Froch, like Floyd Mayweather Jr, chose to retire rather than stick around and get a huge payday fight. Froch’s fans say ‘Froch had already made a lot of money in his two fights against George Groves, so he didn’t need any more money.’ But of course you can never have too much money, and if you’ve got a growing family like Froch, it helps to get all the money that you can get so that you can leave the money to them after you pass on.

“That’s up to Carl [whether he’s be interested in facing Golovkin],” Loeffler said to IFL TV. “That’s up to Eddie [Hearn]. I think Eddie was for it. It’s like with Floyd [Mayweather Jr]. If Carl retires, you can’t force him to take a fight. I think there would have been a lot of intrigue in that fight, because Carl would have been the biggest guy Gennady would have fought. But he’s 100 percent focused on David Lemieux. His focus and priority is unifying the middleweight division. If there’s a big fight that comes up like that, then we’d certainly be interested. You can’t take anything away from Carl. A fight between him and [George] Groves did 80,000 people at Wembley Stadium. So that’s a huge event, but right now everyone’s focused on this event,” Loeffler said.

I don’t think Froch is going to come out of retirement, even though a fight against Golovkin would likely make him big money. I’m not sure if it would be as much as Froch made against George Groves, because Golovkin would obviously be looking to get a bigger cut of the loot. But the fight would be on HBO pay-per-view in the States, and on Sky Box Office in the UK, so the money would be very good. I can’t imagine why Froch wouldn’t want to come back to get that payday.

It’s not as if his legacy isn’t already tarnished due to his losses to Andre Ward and Mikkel Kessler, and his controversial decision win over Andre Dirrell. At least if Froch fought Golovkin, he’d have a chance to make boxing fans forget about his past failures against Kessler, Ward and his controversial decision over Dirrell. But more importantly, the money that Froch could get for a fight against Golovkin.

My guess is Froch would make more than $10 million for that fight. Do you know many people who would walk away from that kind of money? I don’t know. I don’t know of too many fighters that would turn down that kind of good clean cash.

The fact that Froch has shown little interest in taking the fight to get the money, it has to make you wonder what’s going on inside Froch’s head. Is it fear of Golovkin or is Froch simply content with the loot that he’s already got for his fights against Groves?
