By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (46-2, 34 KOs) successfully made weight on Friday in coming in at 173.9 pounds at the weigh-in for his mismatch against No.7 WBA Konni Konrad (22-1, 11 KOs) on Saturday night at the Energie Verbund-Arena, in Dresden, Germany.

Konrad, 30, weighed in at 174.2lbs. Braehmer and his promoters at Sauerland Events picked well in selecting Konrad out of the top 15 contenders, because he’s arguably the weakest and most beatable guy out of the bunch in my view.

The guys that weren’t picked by Braehmer and his promoters for this fight were the following contenders: Andrzej Fonfara, Sean Monaghan, Stanyslav Kashtanov, Felix Valera, Bernard Hopkins, Jean Pascal, Sullivan Barrera, Thomas Oosthuizen, Marcus Browne, Mirco Ricci, Azea Augustama and Mehdi Amar.

If Braehmer wins this fight, then he could be facing former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly in his next fight if Cleverly defeats Andrzej Fonfara in their fight on October 16th at the UIC Pavilion, in Chicago, Illinois. I think the chances of Cleverly beating Fonfara aren’t so good. In fact, I’d say their terrible.

What will be interesting is to see if Braehmer chooses to face Fonfara if next if he beats Cleverly, of if he’ll look to cash out with a big money unification fight against WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson.

Braehmer is reportedly interested in taking a fight against Stevenson, and about the only reason I could see Braehmer taking on a dangerous opponent like that is if he were stuck between a rock and a hard place. In other words, with a fight against Fonfara baring down on him, a fight that Braehmer will likely lose by knockout, it makes sense for him to go for the biggest money fight possible. I mean, if you’re going to lose your title anyway, it makes sense for Braehmer to get the most money possible in the process of losing.

Since winning the vacant World Boxing Association light heavyweight title in December 2013 with a win over Marcus Oliveira, Braehmer has had four easy title defenses over the following weak opposition: Enzo Maccarinelli, Roberto Feliciano Bolonti, Pawel Glazewski and Robin Krasniqi. Heck, that’s basically two years of tune-up fights that Braehmer has had as the WBA world champion. I mean, he hasn’t faced one semi-dangerous opponent. For that reason, you can understand what someone like Fonfara would mean to a guy like Braehmer. I see it as the end for him as the WBA 175lb champion. As such, we may very well see Braehmer taking on Stevenson or even Sergey Kovalev.

As for Konrad, it’ll be an easy win for Braehmer. Konrad has only faced one decent opponent during his career in losing to Denis Inkin nine years ago in 2006 in losing an eight round decision. Believe it or not, that was the last time that Konrad fought a decent opponent during his 13 year pro career. The rest of opposition he’s faced have been weak fodder type opponents. I don’t see Konrad being able to do anything to win this fight. He’s just way out of his class. It’ll be a minor victory if he makes it the full distance in losing.
