Mayweather: I’ve made great investments

Floyd Mayweather vs Andre BertoBy Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. said he’s made good investments with the money that he’s made in his boxing career, and this in turn enables him to walk away from the sport after 19 years as a pro without having to worry about money the way most fighters do.

Mayweather defeated Andre Berto last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada in a fight Mayweather said will make him $70 million. He’s got a guarantee of $32 million. So for Mayweather to make an additional $38 million, he’s going to need some fairly good pay-per-view numbers from Showtime.

“Boxing is, like I said, it’s a sport. Boxing is wear and tear on the body. I had a great career, very comfortable. Made great investments. I’m A-Okay. I’ve been in the sport 19 years. I don’t really know nobody that’s been in the sport of boxing that made somewhere upwards of $800 million,” Mayweather said.

Hopefully for Mayweather’s sake he doesn’t keep burning through his money at a record pace because even with good investments, he could burn through his fortune in no time flat. Mayweather is purchasing a lot of high price vehicles, and you’ve got to wonder what he’s going to be able to do with these automobiles when he eventually looks to sell them.

It’s hard to imagine Mayweather being able to get the money back that he put into purchasing them in the first place. If you’re buying a card for $4.8 million, how do you sell this car and get equal value back when it starts to age? You don’t. That’s why it doesn’t make sense to purchase a lot of cars that don’t hold value. Mayweather would be much better off buying real estate. He could buy dozens of houses and land, and those things would hold value if he was smart about where he’s buying them. But dumping huge money on cars is such a waste. It doesn’t make sense at all.

Keith Thurman doubts Mayweather will retire after win over Berto

WBA “regular” welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman was gushing about Mayweather’s talent that he displayed in his win over Berto. Thurman didn’t think the fight was boring like a lot of boxing fans did. He was amazed at Mayweather’s hand speed and overall talent, which isn’t all that surprising given that Thurman seems to fight a lot like Mayweather with the way that he likes to avoid getting hit. Thurman doesn’t think Mayweather will be retiring off of the win over Berto. He believes that Mayweather can easily come back and win his 50th victory of his career if he picks the right opponent when/if he chooses to come back in 2016 to fight again.

“The man [Mayweather] looked good,” Thurman told Fighthype. “He’s a beautiful boxer; he always has been and always will be. You can’t take away skills and talent, especially when there was effort put into creating these skills day after day. Just from listening to the crowd, it felt better than the Pacquiao fight. For the most part, the arena was still packed. It was a great night. it was amazing speed on Mayweather’s behalf. I would be extremely shocked if Mayweather announced his retirement after such a performance. I think he wanted to showcase his talents with the way that he did. His hook, his pot shots, his movement, it was just beautiful, man. He’s world class. For him, Mr. TBE [The best Ever], he displayed tremendous skills and talent today. If they keep doing what they’ve been doing, picking the right fights, doing what they want to do, I believe he can easily get to 50-0. It’s that simple,” Thurman said.

Mayweather did not look as good as Thurman says he did. He fought a safety first fight, and spent much of the time holding and moving rather than actually fighting. Thurman likes to run around the ring himself in his fights, so it’s not so surprising that he’s gushing about how good Mayweather looked.

Thurman spends less time in the pocket than Mayweather does in his fights. That’s way it’s not surprising that Thurman is so impressed with how Mayweather fought against Berto. In a way, you could argue that Mayweather is a teacher for Thurman, because he runs around the ring even more than Mayweather does when he fights.
