Khan vs. Mosley a possibility for December 13th

khan101By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) says he wants to fight the big names like Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr., but he might instead wind up with a big name from the past in 44-year-old “Sugar” Shane Mosley (48-9-1, 40 KOs) for his next fight on December 13th instead of one of the superstars.

But what the heck, at least Khan would be getting a big name, even if the name is someone who is arguably 10 years past his prime.

Khan has been facing largely washed up and/or weak punchers since his loss to Danny Garcia in 2012. Since that fight, Khan has fought 5’5” Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz, Luis Collazo, Devon Alexander, and Chris Algieri.

Molina is a never was type fighter, but Diaz, Collazo and Alexander are all fighters that have seen better days during their careers but who is now all fading big time. Khan wants to be taken seriously to get the big fights, but he’s not fighting the right guys for him to get the big names.

It’s pretty wacky to think of Khan fighting a guy as hold as the 44-year-old Mosley. I mean, how do you come out ahead when you fight someone that old? It would be a no-win situation for Khan. If he beats Mosley, boxing fans, the media and fighters alike would give Khan no credit due to Mosley’s advanced age.

If Khan loses the fight to Mosley or is made to struggle, then Khan will wind up with egg all over his face and his career completely down the tubes.

“The fight that has been offered to me is Amir Khan,” Mosley said via behindthegloves.com. “Amir Khan said he might do a fight with me in Dubai, so we are checking on that, December 13, and that should be interesting.”

It probably doesn’t matter in terms of a loss ruining it for Khan to get fights against Mayweather and Pacquiao, because I don’t see either of those guys ever fighting Khan in this lifetime. But a loss for Khan surely would do a number on the payday fight against Kell Brook in the future.

The fight will still happen though, because Brook and his promoter Eddie Hearn would likely fight Khan even if he were to lose his next 10 fights. They would take the fight because it would still be a name that the casual boxing fans in the UK would recognize. But with that said, I think the money Khan would get for a Brook fight would be a lot less after a loss to Mosley. Khan could forget about a 50-50 deal, and he’d wind up with not much to show for a Brook fight.

“We’ve been talking about it, me and Amir, doing something out there in Dubai, and hopefully it works out. I can’t wait,” Mosley said.

I wonder what Khan hopes to accomplish in fighting an old timer like Mosley? I know Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao both fight Mosley, but that was 4-5 years ago when Mosley still had a little left. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fought Mosley in 2012, but Canelo was still only 22-years-old back then and young enough to get away with fighting an old timer like that. Khan is pushing 30, and I don’t see why he would need to fight Mosley.

Mosley is coming off of a 6th round knockout win over Ricardo Mayorga last month in August. This was after Mosley had been retired for two years from 2013 to 2015.
