By Jim Dower: Undefeated #7 WBC, #10 WBA junior middleweight Julian J’Rock” Williams (21-0-1, 13 KOs) only need approximately a minute and a half to dispatch a badly over-matched 31-year-old Luciano Cuello (35-4, 17 KOs) in the 1st round on Tuesday night on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox Sports 1 at the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Williams, 25, landed a flurry of punches to get the stoppage by referee Gary Rosato at 1:33 of the round.

On paper, this was a really bad fight for Williams and for the boxing fans because the 11-year pro Cuello has been around for a long time, and he’s more of a journeyman than a fighter ranked No.10 by the WBC. Cuello didn’t have the size, talent, power or hand speed to compete with Williams in this fight.

After the fight, Williams called out former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout to fight him next. Trout said he’ll definitely fight him next. Whether he actually does is another question. It wouldn’t be surprising if these two fighters stay in separate lanes while they move up the rankings to get title shots. I’m not sure that adviser Al Haymon will agree to them picking each other off before they get world title shots.

Williams also said that he’s interested in facing newly crowned IBF junior middleweight champion Jermall Charlo if he’s willing to take the fight. I think that might be a really bad idea for Williams, because Charlo is a far bigger puncher than him and it would be a real mismatch like the one we saw. The difference in punching power between Jermall and Williams is fairly dramatic. Williams really isn’t a big puncher. It may have seemed that way tonight, but that was only because he was in against an awful opponent in Cuello.

In other action on the card, WBA interim super bantamweight champion Moises Flores (24-0, 17 KOs) stayed unbeaten with a grueling 12th round knockout win over challenger WBA #8 Luis “La Ardilla” Cusulito (21-2, 19 KOs) in a fight that was filled with back and forth action.

In the 12th, Flores jumped on Cusulito with a flurry of shots that led to referee Benji Esteves stepping in to halt the fight. It was one of those stoppages where you wish the referee had let it continue.

Both fighters were pretty well beaten up by the end of the fight. This fight was far better than the other two mismatches on the card.

Undefeated super middleweight prospect Caleb Plant (10-0, 8 KOs) kept his perfect record intact with an eight round unanimous decision victory over an over-matched Jamar Freeman, 13-5-2, 7 KOs.

The final judges’ scores were 80-71, 80-71 and 79-72. Plant, 23, knocked Freeman down in the 3rd round with a big right hand. Plant had Freeman hurt in the 4th round after catching him against the ropes and landing a flurry of punches. Freeman did a good job of staying on his feet the remainder of the fight and surviving like a sparring partner rather than an opponent.

Plant looked decent tonight, but he doesn’t have great hand speed or punching power. He was loading up on everything he threw, and just looked mechanical, slow and not particularly powerful compared to the better super middleweights in the division.
