Estrada destroys Marquez

By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBO flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada (33-2, 24 KOs) gave #3 WBA, #3 WBO Hernan Marquez (39-6-1, 28 KOs) a pounding on Saturday night in knocking him down seven times in the fight in the process of scoring a 10th round knockout at the Centro Convenciones, Puerto Penasco, in Sonora, Mexico.

Marquez was badly hurt in the 10th after getting dropped twice by Estrada by right hands. Referee Ramon Pena stepped in after the second knockdown in the round to stop the fight at 1:26 of the round.

The southpaw Marquez, 27, was knocked down two times in the 6th, twice in the 7th, once in the 9th and two more times in the 10th. Marquez was knocked down by left hand body shots in the 6th and 7th rounds. In the 9th, Estrada dropped Marquez with a right to the head.

Marquez, a former WBA Flyweight Champion, landed some good shots throughout the fight. His problems, however, is that he had no punch resistance to the body shots that the 25-year-old Estrada kept nailing him with.

In the 6th round, Estrada rocked Marquez with a heavy right hand to the head that staggered him. Moments later, Estrada dropped Marquez with a left to the body that caused him to take a knee. A short time later, Estrada knocked Marquez down with an identical punch that caused him to take a knee again. In both occasions, Marquez was able to quickly get back to his feet and resume fighting.

Normally when fighters get dropped with body shots, they stay down for a considerable amount of time before getting back up. But with Marquez, he would be down for several moments and then he’d jump back up and resume fighting. That might be one of the reasons why he was quickly knocked down again in the 6th and 7th rounds.

For Estrada, this was his 7th consecutive win since his 12 round decision loss to Roman Gonzalez in 2012. Estrada reportedly wants a rematch with Gonzalez, but I don’t think that would be a good idea.

As good as Estrada looked last night in beating a mediocre Marquez, he’s simply not in the same class as Roman Gonzalez. He hits way too hard for Estrada to handle right now, and I fear if the two fighters were to face each other right now, Estrada would be knocked out this time around instead of beaten by decision.

Estrada needs to raise the level of competition he’s facing because defending his titles against an over-matched fighter like Marquez isn’t even sporting. Marquez was no competition last night, and it was almost boring to watch because he was just getting nailed over and over again by Estrada.

Yes, Marquez did land some really big blows that had both sides of Estrada’s face swollen from the shots, but the fight was very one-sided from start to finish. It would be more interesting to see Estrada fight Gonzalez again or someone like Kazuto Ioka and Zou Shiming.

Estrada has only beaten twice in his career by Roman Gonzalez and Juan Carlos Sanchez Jr.
