Braehmer defeats Konrad

braehmer5By Jim Dower: WBA World light heavyweight title holder Juergen Braehmer (47-2, 35 KOs) had an easy time dominating his opponent #7 WBA Konni Konrad (22-2, 11 KOs) in stopping him in the 8th round on Saturday night at the EnergieVerbund Arena in Dresden Germany. The 30-year-old Konrad quit on his stool after the 7th round had ended.

Braehmer, 36, knocked Konrad down with a right hook in the 6th round. It was one of the rare instances in the fight where Konrad attempted to do anything. Braehmer timed him and knocked him down with a perfect shot.

Konrad didn’t have enough punching power or hand speed to trouble Braehmer at all in this fight. When Konrad did land an odd shot here and there, Braehmer always responded with bigger shots in return that caused Konrad to back off and get on the inside. The fight resembled a sparring match rather than an actual fight.

This fight was as one-sided as Braehmer’s other four world title defenses of his WBA belt.

Braehmer’s promoter Kalle Sauerland said that Braehmer will be fighting next in November against a top contender in Monaco. According to a source, the opponent will be #11 WBA Thomas Oosthuizen (25-0-2, 14 KOs). Oosthuizen has draws against Brandon Gonzales and Isaac Chilemba. Oosthuizen will likely be as over-matched as Konni Konrad was. For Braehmer, this will be essentially his fifth voluntary defense if he fights Oosthuizen, because Braehmer’s recent fight against Robin Krasniqi was a mismatch as well. Krasniqi had done nothing to deserve being ranked No.1 by the WBA.

You can exclude #2 WBA Artur Beterbiev for this fight, because he’s facing Sullivan Barrera next. #2 WBA Andrzej Fonfara is fighting Nathan Cleverly. This leaves Sean Monaghan, Stanyslav Kashtanov or Felix Valera if Sauerland is serious about Braehmer fighting someone from the very top next. He’s not going to match Braehmer against Beterbiev or Fonfara because it would be too dangerous for the aging German champion.

In the undercard, cruiserweight contender Mateusz Masternak (36-3, 26 KOs) stopped an over-matched Carlos Ailton Nascimento (12-2, 9 KOs) in the 2nd round.
