Will Cotto-Canelo winner face Golovkin-Lemieux winner?

cotto00000By Allan Fox: Today’s announcement of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto fight made a big splash with a lot of boxing fans getting excited about the clash between these two fighters on November 21st at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

What was lost during the announcement of the fight today was the fact that the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight is supposed to be fighting the winner of the October 17th fight between IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux and IBO/WBA 160lb champion Gennady Golovkin.

Now that these two separate fights have been made, we get to see whether the winners of the two fights will face each other in early 2016 in a huge pay-per-view fight on HBO.

It would be disappointment if the Cotto-Canelo winner chooses not to face the winner of the Lemieux vs. Golovkin fight. There’s no question that the winner of the Golovkin-Lemieux fight will be interested in facing Cotto or Canelo, because that’s where the money is for those fighters. Golovkin and Lemieux realize that a fight against one of those two fighters will bring in a lot of money. But I’m not sure if Cotto feel the same kind of interest in fighting the winner of the Golovkin-Lemieux fight.

There’s more money for Cotto and Canelo to keep facing each other two or three times than there would be for them to fight the winner of the Golovkin-Lemieux fight. It’s perhaps for that reason Canelo and Cotto included a rematch clause in their contract so that they can face each other again. The only question is when will they fight each other a second time? If they face each other immediately, then the World Boxing Council will have to step in and strip the winner of the WBC title because they’re supposed to be fighting Golovkin next.

As far the price of the Canelo-Golovklin fight on PPV, it’s still unknown at this time. Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya would only say that the price of the fight will be less than the $100 that boxing fans had to pay to see the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao last May. However, don’t be surprised if the price of the Cotto-Canelo fight turns out to be higher than average because De La Hoya is making a big deal out of the fight and believes it’s going to break records. When you have a promoter saying that a fight is going to break records, you can be confident that the price of that fight is likely going to be higher than usual.

“Mark my words (the PPV price) will be a lot less than $100,” De La Hoya said.
We’ll see shortly how expensive the Cotto-Canelo fight will be, but I still think it’s going to be more expensive than usual.
