golovkin7356By Allan Fox: Tickets for the October 17th unification fight between WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) and IBF 160lb champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) go on sale next week on August 12th for their October 17th fight on HBO pay-per-view from Madison Square Garden in New York. This is one of the better fights in the middleweight division, as both guys have huge punching power and can end it with a single shot.

The tickets are economically priced at $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50. Compared to the costly tickets that we saw in the Fight of the Century between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao last May, these tickets are a steal. The Golovkin-Lemieux fight promises to be a lot more interesting fight than the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight as well.

We can only hope that the Golovkin vs. Lemieux fight can go enough rounds to make it an interesting to watch fight. It would be a pity if the fight was to end in one or two rounds, but it’s definitely possible. With the kind power that these two punchers have, it’s going to be very difficult for the fight to go to the later rounds. Neither of these guys has a reverse gear in their game.

Lemieux’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions has pointed out again and again that Golovkin doesn’t know how to fight while going backwards. This may be true. We haven’t seen Golovkin go backwards, and if he’s forced to retreat under the fire of Lemieux, it might result in Golovkin getting knocked out. But we’ve also seen that Lemieux can’t fight going backwards either.

When he ran out of gas against Marcos Antonio Lemieux and was forced to back off in the 6th and 7th rounds, Rubio was able to quickly knock him out. Of course, the reason why Lemieux was knocked out wasn’t because he didn’t know how to fight in reverse gear. He was just really tired from having exhausted himself trying for a knockout in the first five rounds of the bout. But Lemieux did not look good when he was fighting in reverse and trying to keep from getting hit by Rubio after he faded badly.

This is Lemieux’s big chance to prove himself as an A-level fighter. If he beats Golovkin, it will almost surely lead to Lemieux getting a bigger money fight.

Golovkin needs a win over Lemieux to potentially face the winner of the November 21st fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Unfortunately, it’s not a given that the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight will agree to face Golovkin, but there is a chance that they will. If they don’t, then they’ll look bad in vacating the WBC title or having it stripped from them for failure to face Golovkin. If that happens, then Golovkin will be given the WBC title automatically, and then we’ll likely see Canelo and Cotto continue to fight at catch-weights at below 160.
