By Dan Ambrose: This Wednesday, August 12th, boxing fans can get first dibs at purchasing tickets for the October 17th unification fight between IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) and IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The tickets will go on sale at 12:00 p.m. ET this Wednesday. As big as this fight is, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if the tickets sell out quickly. Golovkin has a huge fan base in New York area, and Lemieux has a lot of fans in nearby Canada.

The fight will be Golovkin’s first on pay-per-view of his career. The fight will be televised on HBO PPV. It’ll also be Lemieux’s first fight on PPV. Golovkin will need to win, look good doing so, and bring in a decent amount of PPV buys for him to increase his chances of getting another PPV fight in the future. A fight against the winner of the November 21st fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will certainly be another pay-per-view fight that Golovkin can count on. However, it’s unclear at this point whether the winner of the Cotto vs. Canelo clash will bother fighting Golovkin next or ever for that matter.

The two fighter’s promoters are already quibbling over a rematch clause in the contract, and it’s likely that the rematch that they’re talking about would be an immediate rematch. That means no Golovkin fight for the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight. But even if the winner of that fight chooses not to defend the WBC title against Golovkin, they’ll be stripped of the WBC title for failing to fight their mandatory challenger, which in this case is Golovkin.

He’d like to fight the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight, but he’s not going to drag the winner into the ring and force them to fight if they don’t want to take the fight. Golovkin will just wait for the WBC to strip them of the WBC title if they don’t vacate the WBC title themselves.

This is the first fight that Golovkin has had where he has to seriously worry about the power of his opponent. Lemieux has a very good left hook, and he likes to throw it all the time. It’s his favorite weapon, and he’ll be looking to nail Golovkin with it any chance he can get. That punch is a real game changer for Lemieux. It doesn’t matter how good Golovkin is. If Lemieux can land his left hook, it might be all over for Golovkin. That’s why Golovkin will need to be careful the entire time he’s in the ring with Lemieux, because the Canadian fighter carries his power deep into his fights. Lemieux fades when he goes past the 7th round, but his punching power is still there and it makes him still very dangerous.

The price of the Golovkin-Lemieux tickets are as follows: $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50. There are quite a few of the tickets in the $50 range, which is a good deal for fans because they get a chance to see a very good fight without having to pay a lot of money to see it live. But even the other tickets are at a good price. When you consider how much boxing fans had to pay to see the incredibly dull between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao last May, the Golovkin-Lemieux tickets are practically a steal in comparison. But more importantly, the Golovkin vs. Lemieux fight promises nonstop action from start to finish rather than a tactical boxing match between two aging stars. Believe me if Lemieux blows a shoulder in training camp or during the fight, he’s not going to be able to go the distance against Golovkin. I’d be surprised if Lemieux could make it out of the 1st round if he suffers a shoulder injury like the one Pacquiao suffered against Mayweather.

WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez will be on the undercard against an opponent still to be determined. Undefeated heavyweight contender Luis Ortiz will also be on the card against an opponent still to be determined.
