Mayweather should fight Golovkin, says Hagler

Floyd Mayweather Jr Gennady Golovkin Marvin HaglerBy Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Marvin Hagler thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) should face WBA 160lb champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) next. Hagler sees Golovkin as an interesting opponent for Mayweather to fight. Mayweather is said to be fighting former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Boxing fans as a whole have no interest in seeing Mayweather fight Berto, even if the fight is on free television. They want to see Mayweather fight #1. Golovkin 2. Amir Khan. 3. Keith Thurman 4. Shawn Porter.

Mayweather would impress a lot of fans if he took on Golovkin next because it would show that Mayweather is willing to fight the best and take the biggest risks up until the very end. Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini said that he would include Mayweather in his top 10 of fighters of all time. I believe a lot of boxing fans would include Mayweather in their top 10 of all time fighters if he took on Golovkin and beat him. Even if Mayweather were to lose to Golovkin, he’d impress people by showing a lot of courage.

Hagler figures that boxing great Roberto Duran moved up in weight to fight him during his career. Sugar Ray Leonard also moved up to fight Hagler, and he beat him in 1987.

Mayweather already said that he can beat Golovkin, and that he sees nothing special about him. If this is true, then he should be willing to get him inside the ring so that he can show the boxing world how average Golovkin is. If he really believes what he’s saying then he needs to get Golovkin in the ring for his next fight in September so that the fans can see whether he actually better than him or not.

There are a small segment of the boxing fans who and ex-fighters who believe that Mayweather should fight whoever he wants to fight. However, the vast majority don’t want to see Mayweather take a soft touch. They want to see Mayweather fight the best until the very end rather than taking easy marks in order to pad his resume and avoid suffering a lot. People aren’t able get away with slacking off in their daily jobs without working about getting fired, so naturally they don’t want to see Mayweather coast his way through one or two more fights.
