Khan: There’s a good chance I’ll get Mayweather fight

khan777By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) hasn’t given up hope that he could still land the big money fight he’s been craving against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) on September 12th, even though all signs point to Khan not getting the fight. Mayweather hasn’t exactly been leading Khan on by making the 28-year-old fighter think he’s going to be his next opponent.

Mayweather has said that he’s interested in facing Andre Berto or Karim Mayfield next, not Khan. As such, Mayweather can have a clear conscience in the next few weeks when he eventually makes his announcement about who he he’ll be facing next.

If Khan wants to get bent out of shape about it, then that’s on him, but Mayweather never said that Khan was next in line.

“The fans all want to see him fight against Amir Khan. Does he really want to end his career by fighting someone he knows he’s going to beat and beat convincingly?” Khan said to skysports.com.

Look at this; Khan still thinks he’s going to get the fight with Floyd. It’s so, so sad. I hope Khan has a good support system when he finds out the bad news that Mayweather is going to fight someone else. I’d hate to see Khan fall apart mentally after he hears the news.

The thing is if this is Mayweather’s last fight, he doesn’t need to face a talent, because the fight will sell itself just by it being his last fight. It’s like what businesses do when they put their “going out of business” signs on their windows. Shoppers come in droves looking to get a good deal to buy up all their available merchandize.

So it really doesn’t matter if Mayweather faces Berto, Mayfield or some lower level fighters. The fight is still going to sell and make good clean cash. Mayweather can literally wait until two days before the fight before he announces it, and it’ll still make huge numbers on Showtime pay-per-view. If Khan wants to wait around that long to find out, then that’s his prerogative.

I know I wouldn’t bother if it were me. I’d already have a fight scheduled by now instead of hanging around for nothing. The thing is Khan is likely not going to get the fight. So by him waiting, he’s really wasting his time. The guy should already have a fight scheduled against someone like Keith Thurman or Shawn Porter. Goodness knows, it’s long overdue that Khan actually face someone that can punch their way out of a wet paper bag.

“I think he [Mayweather] is (becoming bad for boxing). I’ve always asked, why finish your career on a low note? People want to see him finish his career on a high, fighting the guys people want to see him fight,” Khan said about Mayweather.

I hate to break this to Khan, but Mayweather picking him out wouldn’t be a case of him finishing on a high note with his career. It would be more like Mayweather finishing on a medium note. Khan isn’t upper there at the top among the top welterweights in my view.

Like Thurman says, I see Khan as someone that doesn’t belong in the welterweight division. His fight against Chris Algieri showed that recently. Khan doesn’t have the size, punching power or the chin to stand in there with guys that routinely rehydrate into the 160s for their welterweight bouts and have huge punching power. Khan says he’s a welterweight, but he’s more of a pumped up one who failed to carry his punching power up with him when he moved up in weight.

Considering that Khan started his career out at lightweight, I think it’s not surprising that he’s not strong for welterweight and really not suited for the weight class. Khan is a much better fighter at 135 or 140. Khan needs to try and go back down to lightweight because I think he’d be a much better fighter at that weight. If he goes to light welterweight, he’d have to deal with Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse, and I think those guys would be too strong for him and too relentless. Khan just needs to quit dreaming about a Mayweather fight, take off that useless muscle he’s put on with exercise, and move back down to his proper weight class at lightweight.

“I know how Floyd works. The Pacquiao fight was only announced six weeks before it happened so I think there’s a good chance the fight between me and him can happen as well. It’s all about me staying in shape,” Khan said.

I think Khan is kidding himself by thinking he’s going to get the Mayweather fight. The longer he goes on with this belief, which I feel is a mistaken one, that he’s going to somehow get picked out by Mayweather, then the bigger disappointment he’s going to have when Mayweather ultimately picks out another opponent for him to fight on September 12th.

I believe Khan lost any chance of him ever getting a fight against Mayweather back when he fought Luis Collazo in 2014. Khan put Collazo in headlocks all night long in fighting a totally spoiling type of fight. If you know anything about Mayweather, he doesn’t select spoilers like that for his opponents. He picks guys that come at him looking to actually fight. The last thing the 38-year-old Mayweather needs is to have to chase down a younger fighter who shoves, pushes down on his head, and puts him in head-locks all night long.
