Mayweather Promotions submitted the request to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, who in turn will make a decision on whether to grant their wish by this Thursday when they hold a meeting.

This move will put pressure on former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, because he’s going to need to convince WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto to fight him on the September 12th date. Canelo has said that he’ll be taking back all the Mexican holidays for himself to fight on those dates in May and September. But Canelo had to back down recently for Cinco de Mayo holiday on May 2nd of this year when Mayweather fought Manny Pacquiao in a huge mega-fight on that date.

Canelo, who isn’t a big PPV fighter when he’s the head-liner, had to back off from fighting that date because all he had to compete against Mayweather’s fight was a match against the ring rusty James Kirkland. But if Canelo can convince the 34-year-old Cotto to fight him on September 12th on the Mexican Independence Day holiday, they could put Mayweather in the position where he’ll need a really big name in order to keep Canelo and Cotto from fighting on that date.

I don’t know why Cotto would want to accommodate Canelo by fighting in a Mexican holiday rather than on just a normal date in November or December. I don’t think Cotto will want to set it up where Canelo will be fighting him on a Mexican holiday in front of many of his own fans instead of Cotto fighting him on a regular date.

As far as Mayweather’s next opponent goes, Amir Khan and Kell Brook are the two leading candidates to get the fight. There hasn’t been any other names mentioned, but you never know with Mayweather. He could choose someone that no one suspects him to fight. Khan is seen as the better option for Mayweather compared to the little known Brook. However, there are a lot of fans who feel that Khan doesn’t deserve a big money fight against Mayweather due to how poorly Khan fought in his recent fight against Chris Algieri. Khan also hasn’t fought any good fighters since his loss to Danny Garcia in 2012. Khan has been matched strictly against non-punchers since that time be design.
