Khan: Floyd Sr. knows I’m the guy that could beat his son

Amir Khan vs Devon AlexanderBy Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) is still waiting with great anticipation to find out if he’s going to be the lucky guy that gets the golden ticket to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) in September at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Khan says he had words with Mayweather’s father/trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr., and he says it involved swearing. Khan feels that Floyd Sr. is very worried about his son facing him because he’s got the talent to give Mayweather all kinds of problems and possibly beat him.

Khan didn’t say why he almost lost to an average fighter like Chris Algieri in his last fight, and why he arguably was beaten by Julio Diaz in their fight in 2013. Khan has had a lot of bad performances that have either resulted in defeats or situations where he was given controversial wins.

Khan has a lot of unfinished business with Marcos Maidana, Algieri, Julio Diaz, Danny Garcia, Breidis Prescott and Lamont Peterson. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mayweather told Khan that he needs to go back and prove that he can beat all of those fighters before he gives him a thought.

“He [Floyd Sr.] thinks Floyd can beat me easily, so I said ‘alright, if that’s the case, then let’s get a fight made,’” Khan said to Skysports.com. “He knows I am the guy to maybe beat his son. He doesn’t like the fight between me and Floyd because he knows I could cause him big problems. We are getting very close to a fight, I hope.”

If Khan doesn’t get the payday fight against Mayweather, then it’s going to be bad for Khan because he’ll be stuck having to fight in the welterweight pits against guys like Keith Thurman, Marcos Maidana, Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter and Kell Brook. That’s going to be really tough on Khan to try and make something happen with his career if he can’t get that one big cash out payday fight against Mayweather. I mean, it doesn’t matter if Khan gets totally humiliated by Mayweather, because the green will be so good that Khan could effectively retire from boxing and just drive around in his fancy luxury cars around the UK for the remainder of his life.

I don’t think Khan could blow through all the green that he’d get in a fight against Mayweather because there would be so much of it. Whatever happens to Khan’s career after the Mayweather fight would be just gravy for him. Khan will have already made the loot and it wouldn’t matter if guys like Maidana, Brook, Thurman and Danny Garcia all brained him and left him splattered all over the canvas. He’ll have made that cash and wouldn’t need to ever fight a serious fight again.

If I were to guess whether Mayweather is going to fight Khan or not, I’d have to say he’s not going to. There are too many other fighters with better reputations with the boxing public, and guys that will bring him more cash than a fight against Khan, which won’t be a big seller in the U.S.

Even Dan Rafael said that the best he could see for a Mayweather-Khan fight is 800,000 PPV buys. In other words, Mayweather would be fighting another Robert Guerrero. Somehow I don’t think Mayweather wants to take his career backwards to fight a guy like Guerrero when he’s got better opportunities to make good money against other fighters.
