Broner still looking very heavy, will he come in overweight?

_DSC8672(Photo credit: Idris Erba/Mayweather Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: With one day to go before Friday’s weigh-in, former three division world champion Adrien Broner (30-1, 22 KOs) is looking very chubby for someone who has to get down to 144 pounds for his catch-weight against former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16 KOs) this Saturday night on June 20th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Broner, 25, looks like he’s still in the 150s right now, which makes you wonder what’s going to happen if he fails to make weight. Given that Broner is the A-side for the fight, it probably won’t be a big deal if he comes in over the 144lb catch-weight, but it would be funny if Porter makes weight and Broner is the one who misses it.

The whole catch-weight and rehydration clause came from Broner’s side. For him to be the one not to make the weight would be a laugh. Steve Kim said he thinks Broner looks like he’s in the 150s, which would be a considerable amount of weight over the 144lb limit given that there is only one day to go before the weigh-in.

Compared to the previous weigh-ins for Broner, where his face looked thin and drained, Broner looks fat in the face. It looks like Broner slacked off in training camp knowing that he could come in four pounds over his normal 140 pound weight in fighting at144 for this fight, but that four pounds is nothing if you don’t monitor your food intake.

“This is interesting, as of tonight, Mayweather Promotions still hasn’t produced a contract for Shawn Porter that specifies weight and $ #boxing,” Steve Kim said on his Twitter. “A source tells me that as of today, Shawn Porter was right around 147-pounds. IMO [in my opinion], Porter is in a good spot, PBC [Premier Boxing Champions] can’t afford for this fight to not happen. They want their money and rules to be clarified. Someone told me mid-to-high 150’s [for Broner], lol, I was stunned but he does look heavy.”

As big as Broner is, I wouldn’t be surprised if he fails to make even 147 on Friday. If Porter is the one that makes the 144 pound catch-weight and Broner doesn’t, then it’s going to give Broner a considerable advantage for this fight because he won’t be weakened at all. If anything, he’ll be stronger because he won’t have put the effort into making weight like Porter has for this fight. I guess that’s one of the advantages of being the A-side in the fight, because you make the rules and can choose to disregard them if you want to if it benefits you.

In looking at both the video and the photos of the two fighters, you can see how heavy Broner is. He doesn’t look like someone who is going to be able to shed all that weight in time to get down to 144 by Friday. Porter is the one that looks like he’s on weight, and is taking the catch-weight seriously. He obviously doesn’t want to lose money by coming in over the limit.
