By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao’s shoulder surgery was a success on Wednesday, after his embarrassing one-sided loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last Saturday night. Pacquiao was operated on by the well-known orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, California to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. There’s no word if it was a full tear.

Obviously a full tear is a much more serious problem than a partial tear. Dr. ElAttrache is happy with the results of the surgery, saying that he could “not be more pleased with the results,” via skysports.com. Pacquiao should be able to come back from the surgery in 9-12 months as long as there are no unforeseen setbacks.

The hard for the 36-year-old Pacquiao is to rehab the injury once his shoulder heals from the surgery. It’s going to take a considerable amount of time for him to bounce back to become the fighter that he was before he was injured. But even a 100% healthy Pacquiao is going to have problems if he winds up facing Mayweather next year like his promoter Bob Arum wants him to. Mayweather appears to have Pacquiao’s number, as we saw last Saturday night.

If Mayweather puts in more effort offensively in the rematch, it’s quite possible that he can knock Pacquiao out. We saw Mayweather landing a lot of right hands that Pacquiao that caught him by surprise each time he would rush forward. If Mayweather had applied himself a little more, he would have had an excellent chance of finishing Pacquiao.

A rematch might not be a good thing for Pacquiao in terms of his career. The last thing the Filipino star needs is another loss to Mayweather, especially if Pacquiao starts making excuses again after the fight and fails to give Mayweather credit for the win. When Pacquiao was interviewed after the fight last Saturday, he seemed out of touch with what had transpired in the fight, as he was saying that he thought he won the fight. Hopefully, Pacquiao has a better grasp of what happened in the ring the next time he faces Mayweather.

Pacquiao potentially is in hot water right now with the Nevada State Athletic Commission for failing to inform them of his shoulder injury before the Mayweather fight. The Commission is especially concerned about why Pacquiao checked off a ‘no’ in the pre-fight medical questionnaire a day before the fight when asked if he had an injury. There’s a potential for a fine or suspension for Pacquiao, although it’s hard to see either of those things as being a real problem for him. But in addition to that, a couple of fans have filed a class-action lawsuit against Pacquiao due to him not disclosing the injury before the fight.
