Mayweather v Pacquiao Part 1

By Jen: I felt compelled to make last Saturday’s fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao the subject of my first blog post as it was such an event, so let’s get started.

The event of “MayPac” or “The fight of the century” was a spectacle to behold, rarely have I seen such an event for a boxing match. The stars on show, to the hype and the sheer build-up of it all, I feel that it will be some time before it will be matched again. Now on to the fighting.

The first main undercard fight was WBO featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Gamalier Rodriguez. This was in a word a mismatch of epic proportions. Gamalier was a game opponent but you felt Lomachenko was going easy on him to get ring time and hone his certain skills against him. The fight itself was over in the 9th with Lomachenko scoring a stoppage, but it could have been stopped way, way before that by either Lomachenko himself or the referee. If I was the referee, I would have stepped in after 5 or 6 rounds to be honest, as Lomachenko was picking Gamalier off at will with superb combinations. Lomachenko’s footwork was exemplary and Gamalier had nowhere to turn as the Ukrainian would always be there. Lomachenko in my opinion is the future of boxing along with former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, WBA/WBO 122 pound champion Guillermo Rigondeaux and WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, and I look forward to following him with intent.

After what was a superb show of ring craft, we had the Leo Santa Cruz v Jose Cayetano at the 126 pound weight limit. This was a 10 round outing for the pair which Cruz bossed throughout, but Cayetano I feel gave a game account of himself by firing back with solid shots where possible but Cruz was never going to be beaten and comfortably won 100-90 on all score cards which was the only outcome possible.

Now the main event…
