Kell Brook: I’m ready to take Mayweather’s zero away from him

brook6677By Scott Gilfoid: Like Amir Khan, IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook feels he’s in great position to get a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the near future, even though Mayweather has shown zero interest in facing Brook.

Mayweather has not mentioned wanting to take that fight, and the lure of capturing Brook’s IBF title is meaningless right now given that Mayweather is vacating all of his world titles. I mean, why would Mayweather vacate his titles just so that he can go after Brook’s IBF strap? It makes no sense at all.

“I’d go in there very confident, unbeaten, I’m a world champion and I’m ready to take that zero away from him [Mayweather,” Brook aid via Ringside.

Mayweather vs. Brook wouldn’t sell in the United States. Even if they staged the fight in the UK, it still wouldn’t be a fight that would sell in the U.S on PPV. It might bring in a large gate in the UK, but even that is uncertain.
Brook has a fight this month against Frankie Gavin on May 30th in the UK. Once Brook has won that fight his promoter Eddie Hearn is talking about wanting to match him against Brandon Rios in the summer.

It’s not a great fight, but it’s a clear step up for Brook from the mediocre opponents he’s been feasting on his entire career. Hearn also is interested in matching Brook against Manny Pacquiao. Bob Arum of Top Rank has spoken about wanting to make that fight. Of course, that was before Pacquiao’s loss to Mayweather last Saturday night.

Arum wants a rematch between Pacquiao and Mayweather. If that fight doesn’t happen, then Arum might be interested in having Pacquiao go after Brook’s IBF belt. I don’t think Arum is going to put Pacquiao in against any risky welterweights like Keith Thurman. Brook is pretty safe because he’s slow and he clinches a lot. Pacquiao would likely destroy someone like that.

“I’m ready…Khan’s got fast hands and long arms so he possibly could trouble Mayweather. But he’s not bringing anything to the table. Mayweather’s got the titles and holds all the belts, except for me who holds the other belt. I’m a fully-fledged welterweight who’s got long arms and I’m very accurate with the jab.”

First off, Brook doesn’t have long arms. If you’ve seen him fight, you’ve probably noticed that his arms aren’t long, not even close to being long. I wouldn’t be surprised if Pacquiao’s arms are longer than Brooks. Secondly, Brook is off by thinking that his IBF title is something that would lure Mayweather into fighting him. Why would he be interested in going after a paper champion’s trinket? I don’t think there’s any interest from Mayweather in Brook’s IBF strap.
