Hearn thinks Carl Froch should retire if he’s not motivated to fight any longer

froch6By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn thinks that his fighter former IBF/WBA 168lb champ Carl Froch should consider stepping away from the game and retiring if he lacks the motivation to continue fighting.

Froch has put his once promising career in a state of paralysis by failing to fight after he beat domestic fighter George Groves for the second time last May. The victory over Groves, who had never beaten anyone of substance at super middleweight, seems to have made Froch content with his career, as he’s been unable to get back in the ring for some reason.

Hearn thinks that it would be bad for Froch to fight unless he were motivated to fight someone, but the problem is he’s not been motivated to fight anyone. The odd part is that only guy that Froch was motivated to fight was Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., but he was beaten recently by Andrzej Fonfara and there’s no real chance of fighting him now. Froch thought the fight against Chavez Jr. would have been a big deal despite Chavez Jr’s sliding rankings.

“If you haven’t got that desire anymore, he wouldn’t be the same fighter,” Hearn said via Sky Sports News HQ. “I think it might be time to sit back and say ‘what a career I’ve had’. I’d hate for him to get retired rather than retire.”

If Froch isn’t willing to risk a loss at this point in his career then maybe he does need to retire, because going after guys like Chavez Jr. isn’t even interesting for a lot of fans. It would have been too much of a sure thing fight for Froch. If he’s just into the fight game for the money but without the risks, then maybe he should go ahead and still fight Chavez Jr. I don’t think there will be much demand for the fight.

I guess Froch can also fight Groves again. Some of his loyal fans in the UK might be interested in buying that mismatch again. But if Froch isn’t willing the fight the best like Andre Dirrell, Golovkin or Andre Ward, then he should think about getting out of the game.

“Unless there’s a fight that motivates him I don’t really want to see him in the ring again,” Hearn said.

I agree with Hearn. If Froch can’t get motivated by the thought of fighting the likes of Ward, Golovkin or Dirrell, then he needs to get out of the game because those talents are such that almost any fighter would get motivated to fight them.

I don’t understand getting motivated for Chavez Jr, because he’s done nothing since 2012. But I definitely do understand getting motivated for the guys that are doing something with their careers like Dirrell, Ward and Golovkin.
