Froch: DeGale and Golovkin are potential opponents

froch552By Scott Gilfoid: Well, I knew it was too good to be true. Former IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch is now saying that he’s added newly crowned IBF 168lb champion James DeGale into the mix for his next fight, along with Gennady Golovkin.

Froch says he’s now interested in potentially fighting DeGale because he’s got his old world title. Froch also thinks it would possibly be a big fight.

I can’t say I’m surprised that Froch is bringing DeGale into the mix. Compared to the Golovkin fight, DeGale is the much easier fight for Froch. Heck, DeGale was arguably beaten by Andre Dirrell, if not for the questionable judging for their fight last week. Froch even admits it himself that DeGale would be an easy fight for him.

There’s something in the saying about water seeing the path of least resistance. Some fighters want to take the easy way instead of doing what’s hard. If Froch takes the DeGale fight rather than the Golovkin bout, I’ll be so not surprised. I mean, I’m actually expecting Froch to steer around the Golovkin match-up, an instead opt to fight DeGale for an easy farewell fight.

“I will fight Gennady Golovkin if I fight again. That’s a potential opponent, as is James DeGale, if the fights big enough,” Froch said to IFL TV. “But to be honest, that’s an easy fight for me; not Golovkin. If he [DeGale] wants to do a fight, I’ll try to do the fight, but don’t call me names. The fights bigger now because he’s a world champion; now that he’s scrapped out a points decision with Andre Dirrell. He literally scrapped it away. He’s got the title now. He’s got my belt. Potentially it could be a fight that’s bigger. They’re [Golovkin and DeGale] potential opponents. DeGale is a world champion. I’m making a decision next week. I’m making it 100 percent for myself and for my family. If I box, I’m only fighting once more,” Froch said.

Froch says he’s making the decision next week. He’s got to know already what the decision is. What’s so magical about waiting another week for boxing fans to get the news? He either wants to fight or he doesn’t, but I definitely don’t see Froch choosing to fight a talent like Golovkin. There’s too much potential for it ending badly for Froch with him getting knocked out cold and left on the canvas in a heap in front of his own fans in London or Nottingham.

Believe me, things can go really bad for Froch in a fight against Golovkin, and I suspect he feels the same way. That’s why I see Froch either choosing DeGale or retirement. Golovkin will not be an option.
