Arum says Pacquiao won’t be ready for Mayweather rematch in September

Floyd Mayweather vs Manny PacquiaoBy Allan Fox: At this point it doesn’t look as if there will be a rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao so that fans of the sport can see how a healthy Pacquiao would do against Mayweather. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum says that Pacquiao won’t be ready to fight in September due to Pacquiao’s injured right shoulder.

It’s unclear at this point how long it will take for the Filipino star’s shoulder to heal.

If Pacquiao needs surgery to fix the problem, he says he can be back from the injury in three months. However, if Pacquiao’s right rotator cuff if torn, like some believe to be the case, it’s likely to take a lot more than three months for him to bounce back from that type of surgery.

“Floyd says he’s going to fight in September and we certainly won’t be ready to fight in September,” Arum said via Mlive.com. “That, you can go to sleep on. That’s an impossibility, as far as September is concerned.”

Mayweather plans on retiring after his next fight in September, which means that unless Pacquiao is ready to fight him at that time, he’ll be out of luck permanently.

Would Pacquiao take a second fight against Mayweather with his shoulder less than 100 percent? I’d say that’s very unlikely. But if he does, he’ll have a great second excuse to give boxing fans for a second loss. He might be better off forgetting about Mayweather and just doing what he can to get his shoulder problem fixed before he decides to fight again.

It would be extremely unlikely for Pacquiao to be ready to fight Mayweather again in just four months from now in September, even if there was interest by Mayweather and the boxing fans. Right now, it seems that the only people in Pacquiao’s team that wants to see a second fight is Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach.

Boxing fans are no longer calling for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight after getting a good dose of it last Saturday night. Mayweather used his height, reach and boxing skills to out-box the shorter Pacquiao. While both fighters promised to make it an exciting fight by getting in the trenches to slug it out, we didn’t see that from either of them. At times, both guys briefly opened up with combinations, but those instances were few and far in between. Pacquiao needed Mayweather to stand still for him to get his punches off, and Mayweather wasn’t interested in fighting that type of fight. No doubt Mayweather had seen many of Pacquiao’s other fights and decided he wasn’t going to stationary for him to get his shots off all night long.

Roach said it was a “very close fight, we’d love to do it again.”

The problem with Pacquiao and Mayweather doing it again is that Pacquiao won’t be ready when Mayweather fights again in September.
