crawford67884By Sean Ness: Boxing is a sport that intrigues me. It gets the juices flowing and lights a fire in my belly. I find myself throwing punches at fresh air and even shouting at my TV when the rest of my family are trying to get to sleep. Every single ill thought and life’s problems absolutely leave my head. I am wholeheartedly happy and this morning (UK time) was no different.

I once again settled in and got ready for a roller coaster of action packed boxing. There was no alcohol involved just me, a coke and the sound of boxing from my TV filling my living room.

The man who came to Glasgow and broke my heart was once again in fine form. Terence “Bud” Crawford (26-0 18 KO’s) last night became a two weight world champion when he overcame Dominican Republic native and now fighting out of Puerto Rico, Thomas Dulorme (22-2 14 KO’s) to win the vacant WBO Light Welterweight title at the University of Texas, Arlington. In the opening rounds Dulorme was making use of his jab but unsuccessful when trying to get his signature looping right hook off. Although the Puerto Rican based fighter appeared to be the aggressor in the opening rounds, he never really posed any real threat to Crawford.

In the third round Dulorme was looking confident and tried to open up an attack however he mis-read the situation because the master tactician Crawford was able to evade his onslaught whilst catching Dulorme with a body shot of his own. The tide seemed to be turning at the end of the fourth round when Crawford managed to connect with two right hands.

In the sixth round it took under 40 seconds for Bud Crawford to launch his own attack which he carried out with precision. Throwing a left and right combination, Dulorme was sent on his heels before eventually taking a knee. He appeared to be cleared eyed but his legs did not feel the same. With the crowd now on their feet, Crawford delivered another flurry of punches sending Thomas Dulorme to the canvas. In getting to his feet Crawford unloaded again before staggering against the ropes with referee Rafael Ramos calling time to the fight. Afterwards Crawford had this to say about the first knockout “I knew I hurt him, I felt it. I wanted to jump on him. He was woozy.” You can watch the highlights of the fight below with credit going to HBO Boxing for the video.

It’s easy to see why in some quarters of the boxing fraternity, people are billing Terence “Bud” Crawford to reach the heights that Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have done in their career. He has a great defence, good positioning and footwork as well packing power behind his punches. After the fight Bob Arum expressed his delight.”That’s why he is fighter of the year”. Next week see’s Terence Crawford traveling to New York to pick up his award of fighter of the year from BWAA.
