Roman Martinez defeats Orlando Salido, captures WBO 130lb title
By Jim Dower: Former two time WBO super featherweight champion Roman Martinez (29-2-2, 17 KOs) defeated WBO 130 pound champion Orlando Salido (42-13-2, 29 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot, San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The final judges’ scores were 114-111, 115-110 and 116-109. Martinez, 32, dropped Salido twice in the fight in knocking him down in the 3d and 5th rounds.
The fight was a winnable one for Salido, but the knockdowns really hurt his cause. Additionally, Salido was docked a point in the 11th for a low blow. The referee pulled the trigger on the point deduction at the worst possible time for Salido, as he was coming back and doing a good job in the later rounds.
Martinez has turned his career around with two straight victories since being stopped in the 8th round by Mikey Garcia in 2013 in a one-sided fight.
