Quigg vs. Donaire a possibility for July 18th

donaire222By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (30-0-2, 22 KOs) could wind up facing former four belt champ Nonito Donaire (34-3, 22 KOs) in the summer if Quigg doesn’t wind up facing IBF super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton, according to Fight News.

Quigg’s promoter Eddie Hearn wants the fight between Frampton and Quigg to be made this summer, but if doesn’t take place Hearn will look for a fall back option, which would be either the 32-year-old Donaire or 29-year-old former IBF 122 pound champ Kiko Martinez (32-5, 24 KOs).

Let me be the first to tell you that I don’t see there being any chance of Hearn matching Quigg up against a murderous puncher like Donaire. Heck, that would be like Hearn giving the green light to putting Quigg in with the real talent in the 122 pound division WBA/WBO champion, Guillermo Rigondeaux, and we’ve seen how Hearn has dragged his feet about that fight.

Rigondeaux is so tired of waiting for the World Boxing Association to force the fight against Quigg that he’s not planning on flying over to the UK to confront Quigg. Donaire would likely do a number on Quigg in blasting him out in a few rounds.

“In any case, Scott will fight on July 18 at Manchester Arena,” Hearn said via the Dailymail.co.uk. “I have held talks with both Nonito Donaire, the Filipino sensation, and Kiko Martinez. Both are former world champions and both are brilliant fights. Scott has options but he knows the biggest fight in the super-bantamweight division is a unification against Frampton.”

More than likely we’ll be seeing Hearn match Quigg against Kiko Martinez. I can’t see Frampton vs. Quigg getting made because Hearn will likely have to dig way deep in his pockets to come up with the cash to make that fight happen. I mean, I think it’s a horrible fight for Quigg because I see Frampton as a much, much better fighter than Quigg.

I don’t see there being any comparison between the two fighters. Quigg is just some guy who has twice fought to a draw against mediocre super bantamweights. If he can’t even beat all the limited guys he’s been facing then how in the heck do you expect him to beat a guy like Frampton.

I’m not even mentioning Rigondeaux I simply don’t see Hearn ever agreeing to put Quigg in with the Cuban star until he’s old and gray and totally shot as a fighter. Who knows how long that will take? Rigondeaux might turn out to be one of those fighters who is still outstanding in his 40s. If that happens I see the fight against Quigg never getting made because I don’t think Quigg will be a factor in the 122 pond division 10 years from now. I see him as possibly remaining a factor for another 3-4 years at best before he’s replaced by younger and more talented fighters.
