Broner a possibility for Algieri

algieri5By Dan Ambrose: Light welterweight contender Chris Algieri (20-1, 9 KOs) recently changed trainers from Tim Lane to John David Jackson. The move comes too late for Algieri, who was easily beaten by Manny Pacquiao last November.

Algieri and his trainer Lane looked over-matched in the Pacquiao fight from the very start. Whether Jackson would have made any difference in the corner is unclear. It’s likely that nothing would have been different no matter who the trainer was for Algieri in that fight.

Algieri plans on fighting again in late May or possibly June. Two possible opponents are Amir Khan and Adrien Broner. Algieri’s promoter Joe DeGuardia has been in talks with Khan’s management for a fight, but not has been decided as of yet. It would be a good fight for Algieri, but also a tough one to take given that he’s coming off of such a one-sided defeat in his loss to Pacquiao. However, the money would be good for a fight against Khan or Broner, and you can’t blame Algieri if he chooses to face one of those guys next.

“We’re working on the proper fight for Chris,” DeGuardia said via Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. “He’s just excited to get back in the ring and getting in good work with John. Right now it’s April 1, so you gotta figure he’ll be back sometime in late May or June, even July, depending on how the fight fits with the networks and who ends up being the opponent, not necessarily that we’re the A-side,” DeGuardia said.

This is definitely the time for Algieri to take advantage of the attention he received for the Pacquiao fight. Getting a good payday against Khan or Broner would be a positive for him.

It would be far better for Algieri to risk his neck facing one of those guys for a nice payday rather than eventually losing to someone far less popular like Terence Crawford. Algieri needs to cash out while he still can, because he takes another loss or two, it’ll likely be too late for him to get the bigger paydays.

Broner would be a better match-up for Algieri than Khan, because he wouldn’t have to chase him around the ring for 12 rounds, and he’d have the height and arm reach advantage. Broner would still be the stronger puncher, but Algieri at least would be able to use his reach to try and win rounds.

Algieri obviously would like to get another big money fight against Pacquiao or someone like Floyd Mayweather Jr. That’s not going to happen unless Algieri can start beating guys like Broner, Khan and Keith Thurman. I don’t know that he can beat any of them. Of course, anything is possible now that he has a new trainer.
