By Gerardo Granados: This situation has not happen only once but back in March 21 of 1997 one of the contenders was awarded the victory over his opponent due a correct disqualification. It was a close and competitive fight until the disqualification. Do the readers remember the name of the fighters involved and the championship belt they disputed that day?

In his previous fight the contender had defeated a great boxer, and there is no doubt that the boxer he defeated will be inducted into the boxing hall of fame in a near future once he officially retires. The opponent had also defeated that same boxer with ease but at a lower weight division.

It was a championship battle and not just a fight for an interim belt. In fact the fighter who was disqualified is a solid candidate to the boxing hall of fame and has won major championships in four weight divisions. I bet you already know the name of the fighters.

Maybe the younger fight fans didn’t watch the fight or the video so I will give you another hint. It was a disqualification on the 9 round due the opponent hit the contender twice when he put a knee on the canvas to take a break from the punishment received. The opponent clearly saw him down but still punch him twice, then the referee counted out the contender and the TV people believed it was a win by Knockout. One minute later it was said he had been disqualified.

There was an immediate rematch that was won by knockout in only one round by one of the finest World Champions of the last era. The name of such great boxer still makes the news and he still appears on major events but now as a TV commentator.

The contender went on to fight more title bouts without much success but for a couple of months he held a major world title.

So do you know the name?
