By Allan Fox: 46-year-old former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr (60-8, 43 KOs) registered his 60th win last Friday night in defeating 36-year-old Willie Williams (14-9-2, 4 KOs) by a 2nd round in cruiserweight action at the Cabarrus Arena in Concord, North Carolina.

Jones hurt Williams with several big left hooks in the 2nd round and then dropped him with a left to the head. Williams was able to stagger to his feet, but the referee halted the fight anyway with Williams unable to stand without swaying back and forth.

Williams came into the fight having lost six out of his last nine fights.
Jones had target practice in this fight with him nailing Williams at will with straight right hands and left hooks. It was too easy for Jones.

With the victory, Jones could be getting a title shot against World Boxing Organization cruiserweight champion Marco Huck next. Before the Williams fight, Jones had talked about him getting a title shot against Huck next if he were to get past Williams.

With that fight now history, Jones could be getting a shot at Huck’s WBO title. You can make an argument that Jones Jr doesn’t deserve a title shot, given that he’s not ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies in the cruiserweight division.

Jones has won his last six fights after losing three straight fights to Danny Green, Bernard Hopkins and Denis Lebedev. Jones’ best win in the last four years was against fringe contender Pawel Glazewski in beating him by a 10 round split decision in June of 2012. This is the same Glazewski who WBA World light heavyweight champion Jurgen Braehmer recently stopped in the 1st round last December in a fight in Oldenburg, Germany. The fact that Jones needed 10 rounds to defeat Glazewski isn’t a good thing.

The WBO might not be doing Jones any favors in letting him fight the hard hitting Huck, because this is a guy who is one of the biggest punchers in the cruiserweight division, and Jones doesn’t have his lightning fast reflexes any longer. He’s still got fairly fast hand speed, but his ability to get out of the way of shots isn’t the same that it once was earlier in his career.
