Is Mayweather worried about the Pacquiao fight?

floyd5By Yannis Mihanos: Worries can destabilize a person in any aspect of life. In this article I will speak about one important aspect of the preparation for the May 2nd mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) and Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s the winner of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will be the one that takes care of the mind and spirit.

For the last 18 years of his career Mayweather has never missed a day on his training. Hard work and dedication has become his principle to follow with his long boxing career.

If you want one day to go to the top then you must follow this plan to its finest detail. Surprisingly for many boxers this is the most difficult part, the one that cannot keep up with for too long.

Mayweather developed his high defensive skills along with his Uncle Roger Mayweather and father Floyd Mayweather sr. The knowledge that he received from both of them was invaluable.

But as with any knowledge it is useless unless you practice it and so it was up to him to follow it and do it right. Mayweather has stayed loyal to his work ethic in the gym at all times. Day after day, week after week, year after year, he trained and followed this philosophy.

I don’t often praise Mayweather, let’s say I am not his biggest fan but I believe I am a fair person and because of that I recognize without a problem his outstanding fitness regimen.

So I cast on him no doubt about being physically ready for May the 2nd.

The thing though that I do cast doubt is that of his confidence when facing his greatest enemy: Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao.

Yes, Mayweather has faced many important opponents in his career but his reluctance for five years to fight Pacquiao has said to me something else, something that Mayweather knows well and that is the real possibility to lose.

This “what if” scenario is looming over the head of Mayweather day and night for the last five years.

The idea of losing has never stood well in his heart and mind and with the fight coming more and more near (May 2nd) there are more worrying signs.
During Mayweather’s first press conference with Pacquiao, I watched him speaking and looking too serious. It was not the usual Mayweather that we know and have grown accustomed to over the years.

So the basic question that comes to me is this:

Will the usual Mayweather enter the ring or the worried Mayweather of the last five years? And I will answer with another question:

Will Manny Pacquiao confirm in the ring the proof for his reoccurring nightmares?

One thing is for sure, there is nothing worse for a boxer than a boxer entering in the ring feeling scared. A boxer who has more to lose than to win.

Feeling scared can lead to Mayweather fighting awkward and distracted, with less control for his normal defensive style.

If Pacquiao finds space to go through with his fast hand combinations, I see Mayweather going down and losing the entire fight.

Only If Mayweather comes to the fight both mentally and physically ready, will I give him a chance to beat Pacquiao.

There is no question about Pacquiao’s readiness for this fight; he is both mentally and physically ready even if the fight happens tomorrow. He has been waiting for five long years for this opportunity to come. That’s how pumped up Pacquiao is for the Mayweather fight on May 2nd.

So it remains to be seen whether Mayweather enters the ring with a lot in mind or not.
