Mayweather: I’m telling Pacquiao we have to give the world this fight!

floyd77777By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr took to his social media site on Saturday to state how badly he wants the mega-fight against the 36-year-old Manny Pacquiao on May 2nd.

Mayweather says that he and Pacquiao need to give the fight to the boxing fans of the world. Mayweather realizes the importance of the fight for the fans, and that’s the reason why he wants to give them the fight.

“From the looks of this video, I’m telling Manny Pacquiao that we have to give the world this fight,” Mayweather said on his Instagram.

There are just a small number of issues standing in the way of Mayweather and Pacquiao signing the contracts. While Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum is saying that HBO and Showtime have resolved their issues, it looks like they still haven’t.

Arum and Pacquiao both have the cache to light a fire under the backsides of HBO to help them speed up the pace of the negotiations, and hopefully that’s what they’re doing. It would be a shame if the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight didn’t get made due to one of the networks choosing to dig in their heels and refuse to make a deal.

I’m not sure that Mayweather would even bother trying to setup another fight with Pacquiao if this one doesn’t work out, because he could figure that he’ll be faced with the same problems again with HBO and Showtime failing to agree.

As for the belief that some writers have that HBO is looking to kill the negotiations this time in hopes of signing Mayweather after his contract with Showtime expires next year, it doesn’t look like that’s something that will work according to an HBO mole.

“Do you actually think Floyd after blind-siding is with the announcement, he’s walking out of here and going to Showtime would actually come here?” an HBO source told nydailynews.com. “He’s not coming back here [HBO]. It’s just not realistic.”

If Mayweather thought that HBO was behind his fight with Pacquiao not taking place, then it would be difficult to see Mayweather coming back to HBO to sign with them. I don’t see it happening unless HBO were to come up with more money than Showtime in a bidding war for Mayweather.

It’s important that the networks and the two fighters agree to terms this time, because this may be the last time that the fight can get negotiated. Mayweather is going to try to make the fight take place, but if he’s blocked from getting the fight due to the networks not agreeing in their negotiations, or Pacquiao his promoter digging their heels into the sand, there’s nothing Mayweather can do. He’ll have to move on and finish his career up fighting other guys.

Mayweather has a great plan-B option against Miguel Cotto he can fall back on for May 2nd. Depending on the circumstances for that fight, Mayweather can finish out his contract in September with a trilogy fight against Cotto, or he can take on someone like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Danny Garcia.

Amir Khan is one of Mayweather’s options, but he’s perhaps too defensive as a fighter to make it an exciting fight. Mayweather needs exciting opponents, and that’s why someone like Canelo or Danny Garcia would be perfect for Mayweather. Keith Thurman is too much like Khan in being a defensive fighter, and that would be interesting either for Mayweather.
