Pacquiao: Mayweather can get the amount he wants

pac999By Chris Williams: WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao says that Floyd Mayweather Jr can get the money that he wants if he agrees to fight him in 2015. It’s unknown what kind of money split that Mayweather is looking to get in a fight against Pacquiao, but you have to believe that it’s no less than a 70-30 split.

Pacquiao badly wants the fight, but he’s in a situation where he’d be the B-side and would need to either accept Mayweather’s terms or else he wouldn’t get the fight.

“Mayweather can get the amount he wants,” Pacquiao said via the Detroit Free Press.

What Pacquiao means by Mayweather getting the amount he wants is the big question. Does Pacquiao mean that Mayweather can still make a lot of money while giving him a generous cut of the revenue or does Pacquiao mean that Mayweather can get any purse split he asks for? I tend to think Pacquiao means that Mayweather can still make money while giving Pacquiao a split such as 60-40 or 55-45. If that’s what Pacquiao is asking for then he might as well forget it.

I don’t think Mayweather is going to give him a 60-40, not after Pacquiao’s losses to Juan Manuel Marquez and Tim Bradley. It’s not just the losses though. It’s Pacquiao’s pay-per-view numbers, which don’t measure up to Mayweather’s. My guess is Pacquiao will need to accept either a 75-25 split or a 70-30 split to get a Mayweather fight. The 75-25 split would be basically the same split that Marquez got in his last fight in 2012, so it’s not as if it’s unfair or anything.

“As early as January this year, I challenged him to a charity fight,” Pacquiao said. “Until now, he has not agreed to it. So, money is not the issue in our fight. This fight is about legacy, this is about making the fans happy and, above all, this is for the good of boxing.”

It’s highly unlikely that if Mayweather called Pacquiao’s bluff to make their fight for charity that Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum would go along with it. I don’t see that happening. But if money really isn’t the issue for Pacquiao, then he should be more than willing to accept whatever money split that Mayweather offers him. If Mayweather offers Pacquiao a 75-25 split then he should in theory be willing to accept the offer, right? If money isn’t the issue for his fight against Mayweather then he should be willing to accept an offer in the 75-25 range in order to get the fight.

As Paulie Malignaggi said, Pacquiao and his management should be willing to accept any low ball offer Mayweather makes in order to get the chance to beat him and then make a ton of money in a rematch where Pacquiao would be able to ask for something close to 50-50.
