charr78By Jim Dower: #10 WBC heavyweight contender Manuel Charr (27-2, 16 KOs) recently traveled to the United States for the World Boxing Council Convention. While in the U.S, the 30-year-old Charr trained a bit at the Mayweather boxing Gym in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Charr was recently knocked out in the 7th round by Alexander Povetkin last May in a one-sided fight from start to finish. Since then, Charr bounced back from the defeat to beat 42-year-old Michael Grant by a 5th round stoppage last October.
While in the U.S, Charr also trained at the Wildcard Gym belonging to trainer Freddie Roach in Los Angeles.

Charr needs a ton of improvement if he wants to be able to compete with the top fighters and potentially win a world title someday in the future.

At 30, Charr has the youth to wait out the likes of IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko until he retires to make a move for one or all of his world titles. However, Charr looked so bad against Povetkin that it would be difficult to picture him beating Povetkin in a rematch or some of the other top heavyweights in the division like Tyson Fury, Kubrat Pulev, Deontay Wilder or Bryant Jennings. Charr needs to work on his defense, because he’s too easy to hit.

Charr doesn’t have great hand speed or one punch power. He’s the type of fighter that needs to bludgeon his opposition into submission.

“America is a dream for every European boxer, it’s also something special to train here,” Charr said via press release. “I can also imagine having a fight here in the US. Training with the world’s best trainers was a lot of fun, it shows me the American boxing style I’m trying to connect with my German boxing style. I’m very grateful that I could train here, and of course happy that everyone gave me so much attention.”
