Khan may need to downsize his ambitions for his next fight

By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan has been talking so much about a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr for his next bout that he seems to be unable to disengage himself from that line of thought after Mayweather recently burst his bubble by saying he’s not a big enough name for him to fight.

Instead of Khan reacting to the news in a logical way by moving on towards a realistic plan-B option, Khan has seemingly been stuck in a rut and still talking endlessly about what he would do if he could get a Mayweather fight.

Khan did recently say that if he can’t get a fight against Mayweather that he would then look to fight Manny Pacquiao. But that’s not a realistic option, and if Khan spends 3-4 months flapping his gums about a fight against Pacquiao, he could find himself fighting very seldom in 2015.

We saw Khan do this in 2013 when he got stuck on waiting for a fight against Mayweather that never happened. Instead of Khan staying busy to fight the likes of Devon Alexander or Kell Brook, Khan ended up wasting the last eight months of the year doing nothing inside the ring.

Khan needs to have a plan-B option that he has a good chance of getting. Saying that he’ll fight Pacquiao is more of a pipe dream than reality for Khan. He needs to have some names of opponents that he can actually fight.

I’d like to see Khan come down to earth with his feet on the ground and start rattling off names like Keith Thurman, Marcos Maidana, Shawn Porter, Lucas Matthysse, Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson. Those are guys that are more up Khan’s alley. Those are fights that Khan would have a good chance of making for his plan-B for the early part of 2015. But with Khan still talking about Mayweather like someone talking about the fish that got away, it seems like Khan is unable to come to terms with the fact that Mayweather isn’t interested in fighting him. Khan should have moved on mentally as soon as he heard Mayweather dismiss him as an opponent, because he’s just wasting his time complaining and wondering why Mayweather chose not to fight him.

“First he [Mayweather] said I was big name, but now he’s saying I’m not a big name,” Khan said today in an interview with Fighthubtv.com. “I believe it’s a fight I can win. Floyd can’t punch. He won’t hurt me,” Khan said.

As you can see, Khan is still stuck talking about a fight that will never happen. Why Khan is still talking about the fight is anyone’s guess. It just looks like he can’t digest the fact that Mayweather isn’t interested in fighting him.
