Hearn gives Khan a great chance of beating Mayweather

khan56By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, thinks Amir Khan matches up well with Floyd Mayweather Jr, and he’s giving Khan an excellent chance of defeating Mayweather if that fight takes place next year.

Interestingly enough, Hearn naturally thinks his fighter Brook can beat Khan. I’m not sure that are too many boxing fans who would give Brook any chance of beating Mayweather. So if we’re to follow Hearn’s logic, Brook could beat Khan, but Mayweather couldn’t.

Hearn believes that Khan has problems against fighter that have huge power and an excellent jab. Hearn notes that Mayweather has neither of these attributes going for him. But Hearn believes that Brook has both of those things going for him which is why he feels he’d beat Khan if he could ever get him to agree to fight Brook.

“That person [that could beat Khan] is a strong, hard punching welterweight with a great jab. And that is not Floyd Mayweather,” Hearn said to the Dailystar.co.uk. “Khan has a great chance to beat him (Mayweather) because he doesn’t have those attributes. That was a perfect fight for Amir and that is why Floyd won’t fight him. Why risk it when it wouldn’t be that big? It’s not like people are shouting from the rooftops for it.”

The thing is boxing fans aren’t all that interested in seeing Mayweather fight Khan. The fans want to see Mayweather fight Manny Pacquiao. But even if Pacquiao was no longer fighting, I still don’t believe that fans would be demanding a Mayweather-Khan fight.

I think the biggest reason for the lack of interest in a Khan-Mayweather fight, besides Khan’s lack popularity in the United States, is the fact that Khan simply hasn’t beaten enough high quality fighters at welterweight to get fans excited about seeing him fight Mayweather.

Khan has beaten Luis Collazo and Devon Alexander at welterweight, and that’s it. That’s a pretty thin resume for Khan at 147. Besides that, it was only two years ago that Khan was whipped in back to back fights by Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson.

The hardcore boxing fans haven’t forgotten those defeats by Khan, and they haven’t forgotten that Khan’s promoters at Golden Boy haven’t put Khan back in with those two fighters. It’s like someone failing a class in school, and instead of repeating the classes, they’re pushed ahead with a passing grade.

Khan clearly has unfinished business against Peterson and Garcia. He also needs real win at welterweight against the likes of Keith Thurman or Kell Brook. In other words, Khan needs to fight someone with power and prove that he can beat them. You can’t really count the light hitting Alexander as a big victory for Khan because it’s common knowledge that Alexander can’t punch at all.

Alexander was also beat up by Shawn Porter last year, who did a far better job of beating Alexander than Khan did. Porter actually beat Alexander up in that fight, and it was totally one-sided. It doesn’t take a lot of courage to take on a fighter who was beaten as badly as Alexander was by Porter.
