russell jr(Photo credit: Kyler Locke/Little Creek Casino Resort) By Allan Fox: #6 WBO, #7 WBA Gary Russell Jr (24-1, 14 KOs) will be looking to bounce back from his recent loss to Vasyl Lomachenko when he faces Christopher Martin (28-4-3, 9 KOs) in a scheduled 10 round bout tonight at the Little Creek Casino Resort, in Shelton, Washington, USA. The fight will be televised on Showtime Extreme.

Russell Jr, 26, was beaten by Lomachenko by a 12 round majority decision last June in a fight for the vacant World Boxing Organization featherweight title. Russell Jr was no match for Lomachenko in that fight, and he the defeat has really bugged him.

Russell Jr wants to win one of the world titles at featherweight in 2015, and then face Lomachenko to try and avenge his defeat. Russell Jr knows what he did wrong in that fight, and he plans on correcting his mistakes when he faces Lomachenko for a second time around.

Tonight’s fight is little more than a formality for Russell Jr, because Martin is nowhere near the same class as he is in terms of talent. This fight figures to be a mismatch if Russell Jr brings his A-game. Martin, 28, has lost two out of his last three fights in defeats to Miguel Marriaga and Enrique Quevedo. Martin also has losses to Luis Orlando Del Valle and Jose Angel Beranza.

“I will never get over the loss to Lomachenko,” Russell Jr said via ESPN.com. “Even if we fight again and I beat him, I will never forget that first loss.”

Lomachenko fought smart by staying on the outside during the first six rounds to avoid the much faster Russell Jr. In the second part of the fight, Lomachenko began to slowly walk Russell Jr down and dominate him with power shots. Lomachenko was still forced to box at times due to Russell Jr’s advantage in speed, but for the most part, Lomachenko was able to take advantage of the tiring Russell Jr in the second half of the fight.

“This is not an easy fight for either of us, but it is my chance to defeat one of the best featherweights in the world so, of course, I am excited about the opportunity,” said Martin.

This will likely prove to be an easy fight for Russell Jr as long as he doesn’t come into the fight with mental baggage from his loss to Lomachenko. Martin isn’t nearly as talented as he is, and this should be a very easy fight.
