Floyd Sr not sure if Mayweather will fight Pacquiao or not

floyd6333By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Sr, the father and trainer of WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr, isn’t sure at this point whether Mayweather Jr will be getting in the ring to fight Manny Pacquiao in 2015.

Floyd Sr is normally very vocal about whether Mayweather Jr will be fighting Pacquiao not, but in this case he’s not sure what’s going to happen between them and he doesn’t appear to be ready to expound on the subject.

“That’s out of my control,” Floyd Sr told Fighthype.com. “I don’t know whether they’re going to fight or not.”

It’s likely that if Mayweather does wind up fighting the 36-year-old Pacquiao, Floyd Sr won’t know about it until the contracts are signed. Mayweather is likely going to stay silent about the negotiations because if he says anything the news will travel fast, and before long the entire world will find out about it.

If a fight does take place between Mayweather and Pacquiao in 2015 then it’s going to likely require that Mayweather move off the traditional dates that he’s been fighting on in May and September, because Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has been talking about those dates being for the Mexican people.

You can understand why Arum wouldn’t want Mayweather to fight on May 2nd, because that’s a date that Arum’s fighter Miguel Cotto could face the highly popular Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on HBO pay-per-view. However, for Arum to still be resistant about Mayweather fighting in September, it could mean that Arum has another fighter in his Top Rank stable that he wants to match against Canelo after that. It’s possible that Pacquiao is someone he’d like to match against Canelo, because otherwise it would make no sense for Arum to suddenly out of the blue become protective of the Mexican holidays.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will need to be announced soon if they want to be able to market it in a huge way if they wind up fighting on May 2nd.

It would seem that they’re running out of time if they plan on fighting on that date. But it remains to be seen whether Mayweather will want to do things Arum’s way by agreeing to fight in April or June.

That would seem like the last thing that Mayweather will agree to do. He’s not likely going to want to be seen caving in to Arum’s wishes, because it would make it seem like he’s letting the Top Rank fighter dictate to him as if Pacquiao is the A-side rather than the B-side in the negotiations.

When you’re the A-side as Mayweather is, you don’t let your B-side opponent tell you when the fight is going to take place and you don’t let your B-side opponent kick you off dates by not agreeing to fight on those dates.
