By Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Macklin (31-6, 20 KOs) can forget about his dream about fighting WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. Earlier tonight, Macklin was stopped in the 10th round by Jorge Sebastian Heiland (25-4-2, 13 KOs) in their WBC middleweight title eliminator at the 3 Arena in Dublin, Ireland.

Heiland totally dominated an old, slow and badly outclassed Macklin before stopping him with a flurry of shots in the 10th round. The fight was stopped at :42 of the 10th. In winning the fight, Heiland captured the WBC International 160 pound title.

In a sign that Macklin had no business fighting in a WBC middleweight eliminator bout, he won his previous fight against little known Jose Yebes by an 8 round majority decision last September. I saw the same fight and had Yebes easily winning. He was clearly robbed in that fight, but ultimately it didn’t matter because it only led to a Macklin fighting a guy that he had no preparation for fighting in Heiland. You could see straightaway tonight that Macklin had no business sharing the same ring with Heiland tonight, because the talent just wasn’t there for Macklin. He looked like an old 32-year-old fighter older than his age, and in no way ready for what Heiland had to bring for him.

It’s hard to say what Macklin should do now with his career. His fights against Yebes, Heiland and Gennady Golovkin showed pretty clearly that there’s nowhere for Macklin to go in the middleweight division. I mean, if he can’t beat Heiland or Yebes, then there’s no point in Macklin continuing on.

In other action on the card, super featherweight Patrick Hyland (29-1, 13 KOs) defeated Oszkar Fiko (10-7, 8 KOs). The fight was scored 80-72 in Hyland’s favor.

Super featherweight prospect John Joe Nevin (3-0, 2 KOs) defeated Jack Health (3-8, 2 KOs) by a 1st round stoppage. Nevin put Heath down several times in the 1st round before the fight was stopped.
