Martin Murray needs win over Spada to get Golovkin fight

murray64 - CopyBy Scott Gilfoid: WBC Silver middleweight champion Martin Murray (28-1-1, 12 KOs) is hoping to get a victory over #7 WBC Domenico Spada (39-5, 19 KOs) this Saturday night to potentially get a fight against World Boxing Association Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

Murray still isn’t sure if he’s going to be facing Golovkin or going in another direction, which is kind of interesting because everyone is saying he’ll be facing Golovkin next February if he can get past the 34-year-old Spada in their fight on Saturday at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The fact that Murray isn’t sure which middleweight champion he’ll be facing suggests that we might be seeing a Golovkin-Murray fight. Obviously, it helps Murray to have boxing fans thinking he’s going to be next in line for Golovkin, because it’s free advertising, but it’ll be disappointing to those fans if Murray and his management opt to look in another direction rather than going the Golovkin route.

“As long as I win, I’m going to be in position for another world title fight,” Murray said to Buncey’s Boxing Podcast today. “There’s a potential for a fight against Golovkin. It looks like its heading that way, but first I have to get past Spada.”

“I think he [Rubio] was expecting to get beat,” Murray said. “I thought he could have gotten up. I thought he could have made weight. I just thought he was looking for an easy way out. I think a lot of them [Golovkin’s opponents] are beat before they get in. I thought [Gabriel] Rosado stood up to him, and [Curtis] Stevens did as well, but they were outclassed. I think where his opponents are going wrong is accepting defeat before they get inside the ring.”

Murray, #1 WBC, #3 IBF, can’t afford to assume that he’s going to automatically get past Spada this Saturday night, because we recently saw Murray win a controversial 8 round decision over Sergey Khomitsky last year in December.

Murray looked as poor in that fight as he did in his loss to WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez last year in April. Murray spent too much time covering up like a sparring partner rather than looking to win the fight.

Murray is tailor made for a fighter like Golovkin, because he covers up for long stretches of his fights with his high guard. If Murray does that against Golovkin, he’s going to get taken out with a body shot.
