Froch says he could fight DeGale if he looks good against Periban

froch552By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) says he’s not sufficiently motivated right now to get out of bed and start training hard for a title defense against #1 International Boxing Federation challenger James DeGale (19-1, 13 KOs), but that could change if DeGale shines next month against #10 WBC Marco Antonio Periban (20-2-1, 13 KOs) in their fight on November 22nd at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

If DeGale looks good in beating Periban, a fighter who was recently beaten by J’Leon Love and Sakio Bika, then Froch says he might change his mind. The fact that J’Leon Love looked good in beating Periban suggests that Froch is making it awfully easy for DeGale to get a fight against him.

Love was in turn knocked out in his next fight by Rogelio Medina in just three rounds. So you can see beating Periban doesn’t mean a whole lot, does it?

“If DeGale goes out and produces a heck of a performance next month and people start saying ‘I think DeGale could give Froch a real test’ then I’ll have a look again,” Froch said to the Nottinghampost.com. “The pressure is all on him. It’s not a fight that motivates me if I am being honest and it’s one that does not really tick boxes for fans of the sport and the general public.”

Froch went on to say that if he was offered a fight against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in Las Vegas, Nevada, he’d jump at the chance to take it. Froch sees a fight against Chavez Jr as a big fight for some reason. He’s probably not aware of the fact that Chavez Jr couldn’t even sell out StubHub Center for his fight against Brian Vera last year. Froch seems to think that Chavez Jr is a huge ticket seller, but a lot has changed since his loss to Sergio Martinez in 2012. Chavez Jr isn’t seen in the same light by a lot of boxing fans since that fight.

If Froch wants to impress boxing fans he’ll have his promoter Eddie Hearn push for a fight against Gennady Golovkin, because that’s the guy that Americans are into right now, not Chavez Jr. Froch seems to be three years behind on what’s happening in the U.S. Chavez Jr is someone that is really still in the rebuilding stage of his career after his loss to Sergio Martinez.

Chavez Jr has only fought twice since that fight and both were against the middleweight Brian Vera, who Chavez Jr dragged up in weight to the super middleweight division. Vera arguably beat Chavez Jr in their first fight, but found himself on the receiving end of a controversial decision loss. Chavez Jr definitely beat Vera in their rematch, but in March of this year, but he still didn’t look great in that fight. The question is why is Chavez Jr still fighting middleweights while fighting in the super middleweight division?

Someone needs to clue Froch in that Golovkin is the guy he should be targeting in the U.S if he wants to impress boxing fans. It’s definitely not Chavez Jr. Where did Froch come up with Chavez Jr?
