canelo77777By Allan Fox: Newly crowned IBF junior middleweight champion Cornelius Bundrage (34-5, 19 KOs) is hoping to get a fight against former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) in the near future.

Bundrage, 41, thinks that Golden Boy Promotions will now allow Canelo to take a fight against him because of his recent wins over Erislandy Lara and Austin Trout. In the past, Bundrage felt that Golden Boy was protecting the red-haired Canelo due to him being such a valuable investment for their promotional company, but now that he’s showed them that he’s capable of beating the top fighters are 154, they’re more willing to take chances with him.

“They were trying to protect their investment. They wouldn’t want to put Saul Alvarez in with me because of all that money they had behind him,” Bundrage said to Ringside Toe 2 Toe podcast at Skysports.com. “After Mayweather, the biggest star out there is ‘Canelo’, so they wouldn’t want him to lose.”

Canelo is going to be looking for a much bigger name for his next fight in May of 2015 than Bundrage. Canelo chose not to fight in December due to an ankle problem, so he’s going to want to make sure that his next fight is against a pay-per-view worthy opponent like Miguel Cotto or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Bundrage may be a champion at 154, but he doesn’t have a big enough name for Canelo to make it a PPV fight against him. It would have to be on regular HBO, and Canelo obviously won’t be interested in fighting his next fight on regular PPV at this time given that he missed his December date.

“Now he’s fought Mayweather and he’s fought against Lara, guys like (Austin) Trout, I feel like they will take a chance with a guy like me. He’s seasoned now and more of a veteran, and they will probably take that chance,” Bundrage said.

Canelo probably would take a fight against Bundrage if there was nothing else available, but he’s sitting in a good place right now with potential big money fights against Cotto, Chavez Jr, Gennady Golovkin or Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Bundrage defeated IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina by a 12 round unanimous decision on October 11th of this month in Cancun, Mexico. Bundrage dropped Molina twice in the fight en route to winning by a 12 round decision.
