By Chris Williams: WBC interim middleweight champion Marco Antonio Rubio is picking former two division world champion Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) to defeat WBA/WBC 147lb champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) this Saturday night in their rematch on Showtime pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Mayweather-Maidana 2 fight goes for $64.95 on PPV for boxing fans who still haven’t ordered it.

Rubio believes that Maidana’s aggressive fighting style is going to give Mayweather problems in this fight, especially with the way that he attacks by throwing punches everywhere. Rubio sees this as Maidana’s best chance of beating Mayweather on Saturday.

When asked by esnewsreporting who his favorite fighter is in boxing, Rubio said “Marcos Maidana. I’m very confident Maidana will pull off the win.”

Rubio says the best way for Maidana to win is to make sure that Mayweather can’t relax in the fight the way he wants to.

“Don’t let him [Mayweather] get comfortable in the ring. Do everything – box, punch, everywhere,” Rubio said.

This sounds like the same plan that Maidana used the last time he fought Mayweather, and I’m not sure that it’s going to work this time. Mayweather already adapted the last time he fought Maidana after the 4th round, and now Mayweather’s going to be starting from scratch with that knowledge in the rematch. Unless Maidana has something new he can spring on Mayweather, Maidana’s going to be neutralized from the get go this time.

Rubio trains at the same gym in Oxnard, California with Maidana, so you can understand why he might be pulling for Maidana rather than Mayweather. They both have Robert Garcia as their trainer, and both guys are going into fights where they have little chance of winning.

Rubio faces WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin on October 18th at the StubHub center in Carson, California. The fight will be televised by HBO Championship Boxing. Rubio is going to need to land a big knockout blow if he’s to win that fight, because he doesn’t match-up with Golovkin in the speed, defensive skills, youth or power department. Rubio has good power, but he doesn’t have Golovkin type power.
