quillin53By Jim Dower: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin has applied for and been given a second extension to sign his part of the contract for his mandatory title defense against #1 WBO Matt Korobov (24-0, 14 KOs). The new extension is until this Thursday, September 4th at 4:00 p.m.

Quillin’s previous extension expired earlier today, but he was then given another one after his company Golden Boy Promotions asked for one. This will be the final extension the World Boxing Organization will be giving to the 31-year-old Quillin, however.

There are rumors that Quillin may choose to fight WBA World middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs for his title. The money for the Jacobs fight is supposedly the same as for the Korobov fight, but it’s an arguably more winnable fight for Quillin than it would be for him to take on Korobov.

If Quillin decides he wants to go in another direction and not fight Korobov, then Quillin’s WBO title reign will be over. The WBO will then strip Quillin of his title and have Korovbov face the unbeaten #2 WBO contender Billy Joe Saunders (20-0) for the vacant WBO middleweight title.

Quillin will be getting a huge $1.2 million payday if he defends his title against Korbov, thanks to Roc Nation Sports, who won the purse bid for the fight with a huge $1.9 million bid.

Quillin’s wife just had a baby, and this is said to be the reason for the delay. However, there’s still some people in the boxing world who feel that Quillin’s adviser Al Haymon may see the Jacobs fight as the more desirable bout then to take a risky fight against the hard hitting Korobov.

Korobov was an excellent amateur while fighting in Russia. But since turning pro, his career has been taken slowly. He seems to have had problems with his stamina in adjusting to fighting more than 4 rounds.
